The 90s were an iconic time. The fashion was everything, technology was starting to shift, not to mention, the 90s introduced us to some of the most famous pop stars that we still listen to today. Unfortunately, like any other decade, the 90s had its fair share of one-hit wonders, however, there were still a number of pop stars that made it big in the decade. While some of these musicians like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake were able to make the transition and stay relevant through the early 2000s and today, some pop stars were not able to do the same.
Musicians that were big in the 90s like Hanson, Vanilla Ice, and Jewel tried to make their music work when we transitioned into the new decade, however, they faded away and people lost all interest in them.

15 Vanilla Ice
Vanilla ice was the rapper that brought us the iconic song “Ice Ice Baby.” He had a couple of hits after that, however, the rapper’s career soon fell flat. After a few years of trying to find himself and figure out what to do, Vanilla Ice finally found his niche; in the home renovation world. He started renovating homes in Florida, and even got his own show out of the deal, The Vanilla Ice Project.
14 Natalie Imbruglia
We all know Natalie Imbruglia from her hit debut single, “Torn.” Since the song made it big in the 90s, Natalie has released other music, however nothing was as successful as “Torn.” Natalie took some time off from the music world to be a mother. Natalie did eventually make it back to the music scene, however, nothing compares to the success she had in the 90s.
13 Michael Bolton
Michael Bolton is known for singing some of the most romantic ballads of the 90s. He’s had a career spanning over the past few decades, however, his hayday was truly in the 90s. Throughout the 90s, Michael Bolton sold more than 24 million albums just in the US alone. He was an international superstar, however, as soon as the 90s ended, so did his popularity.
12 Ricky Martin
Ricky Martin was “Livin’ La Vida Loca” at the end of the 90s. He was around in the 80s in the boyband Menudo before moving into his solo career. He had quite a few hits like “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “She Bangs” that helped him continue into the first few years of the 2000s. Now, however, things have calmed down for him. He came out in 2010 and married his husband in 2017 and is now focused on being a dad to four children.
11 Shaggy
Shaggy brought us hits like “It Wasn’t Me” and “Mr. Bombastic.” But after those big hits, what happened to him? Like Ricky Martin, he was able to use his momentum to keep him going through the first few years of the new millenium, however, after that, things fizzled out for him. He still released music, and is still making music today, however, people seem to have lost interest in him and his newer music.
10 Hanson
Everyone knows the classic hit “MMMBop” by Hanson — you had to be living under a rock if you didn’t know it back in the day. The song launched the brothers into superstardom. Since then, the brothers have grown up before our very eyes. They’re all adults now with children and lives that are much different from their “MMMBop” days. The guys have made music since their catchy track of the 90s, however nothing gained in popularity as much as that song.
9 Sheryl Crow
Sheryl Crow is one of the queens of pumping out hits during the 90s. She brought us songs like “All I Wanna Do” and “If It Makes You Happy” that launched her into superstardom. Of course, like many others, she released a number of songs and albums after those big hits, but nothing could ever compare to those hits from the 90s. In 2019, Sheryl released her final album Threads, putting an end to her career — for now.
8 Coolio
Coolio was a rapper from the 90s that brought us songs like “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New),” or the Grammy Award-winning hit “Gangsta’s Paradise.” If neither one of those rings a bell, then you’ll definitely recognize him from rapping the theme song to the show Keenan and Kel. Besides those hits, Coolio has definitely faded from the music scene. He tried to get into other things like TV and movies, but nothing really took off for him. Unfortunately, he got in trouble with the law a few years ago, and we haven’t heard much from him since.
7 Brandy
Brandy is a name that you probably haven’t heard in quite some time. She’s the voice behind the hit songs “Sittin’ Up In My Room” as well as her duet with Monica, “The Boy Is Mine.” She was also known for her role on the sitcom Moesha and starring in the remake of Cinderella alongside Whitney Houston. Since then, Brandy’s been through a lot. She was involved in a fatal car accident that sparked a lot of legal troubles for the singer. She tried to release new music afterward, but everything she released flopped. She also turned to reality TV, but nothing has taken off for her.
6 Aqua
Aqua was a band from the 90s that you might not recognize their name at first, however you’ll definitely know their hit “Barbie Girl.” The single was what got the band international recognition, and after that, nothing much else came from the band. There was a love triangle between the members which was what caused the band to break up at the end of the 90s. They have reunited in the past few years to play some shows, however, we’re pretty sure nothing can ever beat the impact of “Barbie Girl.”
