America’s Next Top Model was (and honestly still is) one of my favourite reality TV shows from the early to mid 2000s. Basically the show followed a group of aspiring models that completed a variety of challenges and photo shoots to be crowned top model. Over the weeks, contestants were eliminated based on how well they performed. And, of course, there was plenty of drama to be enjoyed each episode that always had us coming back for more.

Though host and judge, Tyra Banks, did her best to promote a healthy, empowering, body-positive message on the show, that’s not always how things came across. ANTM has suffered through a variety of cringeworthy moments and scandals that haven’t sat well with fans. Check out these inappropriate photos we’re sure the show’s producers don’t want you to see.

Will your opinion of ANTM change after seeing this? I can’t ever imagine not watching re-runs of this classic reality show, but perhaps ANTM crossed the line one too many times.

15 When The Judges Were Obsessed With Ann's Waist

Everyone was obsessed with Ann Ward’s waist when she came onto the show. Despite her waifish figure, the model had an extremely small waist, giving her a sort of hourglass look without having any real curves. Some fans felt that Ann couldn’t have achieved her very tiny body healthily, and glamorizing her petite waist on TV was only promoting unrealistic standards.

It didn’t help that the judges were obviously obsessed with her figure. During one scene, Ms. Alexander came and put his hands around Ann’s waist, proving just how tiny it really was. Ann went on to win the entire competition, so her unique figure definitely worked to her advantage. But I bet the show is careful not to promote unhealthy standards of skinniness after this controversy.

14 When Tyra Had The Models Sport Black Face

Hardly anyone was impressed with the photoshoot where Tyra had the competing models transform into different races. Cultural approbation is huge thing in today’s society, and many fans felt it was weird that Tyra was making white contestants dawn blackface and vice versa. Even some of the models expressed that the whole challenge made them feel uncomfortable.

“What we thought was a celebration turned out to be… very negative in some of the press and a lot of them were even saying that it was a form of racism,” Tyra told Access Hollywood in 2009 when she finally addressed the controversy. “A lot of them went so far as to accuse me and Top Model of putting the girls in black face.”

She went on, “I want to be very clear: I, in no way, put my 'Top Models’ in blackface,” she said. “I’m a black woman. I am proud. I love my people and the struggle that we have gone through continues, and the last thing that I would ever do is be a part of something that degraded my race.”

13 When Yu Tsai Kept Calling Chantelle A Panda

When Chantelle Brown-Young (we now know her as Winnie Harlow) came onto the show, she was a very special contestant. The 20-year old has vitiligo, a skin pigmentation disorder, so she has patches of white on her otherwise dark skin. All of the judges told her that it made her unique in the fashion industry, but it didn’t keep creative director Yu Tsai from repeatedly calling her a "little panda."

Fans were already upset after Mr. Jay was shockingly fired from the show, only to be replaced by Yu. It didn’t help that Yu wasn’t the easiest person to warm up to. Cameras showed Chantelle asking him numerous times not to call her that, but he refused. Yu said that it was a positive name and she should be flattered.

Tyra has always been about body-positivity and building people up, so I'm sure she was horrified to learn this when it came back to her.

12 When Tyra Pressured A Girl To Pose Nude

I could never imagine posing in some of the outfits the contestants have had to rock, but posing without any clothes on is a completely different story. Tons of fans could relate to Robin Manning, who refused to pose nude during her run on ANTM. Robin was a southern belle with strong conservative Christian beliefs that she didn’t want to compromise.

However, the judges were less than supportive with Robin’s decision. “My Grandmother used to always tell me, if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything,” Robin told Jay Manuel as he tried to get her to partake in the photoshoot.

But it was Tyra’s insistence that Robin should’ve just done it that didn’t sit well with many fans. Tyra pretty much said Robin’s modeling career should be more important than her religious beliefs. Tyra told Robin “no one was looking” and she should go for it, which caused Robin to shake her head at Jay. She was eventually eliminated due to her reluctance to pose nude.

11 When The Models Posed As Men With Drag Queens

ANTM has never been one to shy away from LGBTQ themes. So tons of fans were elated when they decided to do Ru Paul-inspired shoot and pose with drag queens. But the one thing that didn’t sit well with some of the public was that the female models were dressed up to look like men.

Some fans took to social media to say they would’ve preferred seeing the models dress up as drag queens rather than regular old guys. Some even felt that having the models cross-dress—and not in a campy way—was only making fun of the drag queens. However, others said that that the shoot was progressive and gave attention to the LGBTQ community.

What do you think? Was this photo shoot in good taste or one the show should’ve avoided?

10 When Rebecca Just Passed Out

I can only imagine the lengths some contestants must go to keep their slim figure. From intense workout routines to not eating—or at least not eating enough—I'm sure some models were suffering severely from their bad habits. But no time was as shocking as when Rebecca Epley passed out.

The Minnesota-born model fainted right as Tyra was telling her to work on her presence. Everyone—including the judges—were stunned at what happened, especially given that she seemed completely fine moments before collapsing. Rebecca was rushed to the hospital, and it was later revealed she had a pre-existing health condition that caused her to faint.

In true ANTM style, the judges kept going with their criticism of Rebecca’s photo of the week, even though she’d literally just collapsed. Although the contestant was later fine, it wasn’t enough to help her win the entire competition.

9 This Shocking Before & After Of Jael Strauss

Jael Strauss was an edgy blonde model who we all thought had a chance at the crown during her time on ANTM in 2007. However, Jael’s life spiralled out of control after she was kicked off of the show. She plunged deep into a crystal meth addiction and soon found herself homeless.

This before and after shot shows just how much drugs have changed Jael’s gorgeous face. I guess her chances of a serious modeling career have truly gone down the drain. In an effort to get her help, Jael’s family arranged an appearance on Dr. Phil, but not even that helped her help herself.

Jael is definitely one contestant the show probably wishes they’d never allowed on, given her difficult (and illegal) history. Luckily, as of March 2017, Jael is reportedly three years sober and has a stable place to live. We’re wishing you the best, Jael!

8 When Tyra Lost Her Cool At Tiffany

For the most part, Tyra has kept her cool while the cameras were filming. But there was one scene in particular that no one could forget; and it showed off a side of Tyra we’re not used to seeing.

During a panel in 2005 during cycle four, Tyra got angry after she felt like Tiffany Richardson didn’t care that she was being eliminated. Tyra proceeded to yell at Tiffany, telling her that she should care more and be more grateful for this opportunity. “I have never in my life yelled at a girl like this… I was rooting for you. We were all rooting for you!” Tyra yelled.

TBH, I started feeling bad for Tiffany for being put in such an awkward position. She’s being eliminated. Who cares if she doesn’t seem sad enough over that? Maybe she was waiting to go home and cry in private! This scene totally didn’t help Tyra’s image!

7 When Michelle Was Accused Of Having A Flesh-Eating Virus

I couldn’t imagine what cycle four contestant, Michelle Deighton, went through after her co-stars began accusing her of having a flesh-eating virus. The model had some blemishes on her face that were not contagious and easily covered up by makeup, but that didn’t stop the flesh-eating virus theory from making it to the rumor mill.

The judges ended up asking her about her condition during a panel when the fake news got back to them, and Michelle had to awkwardly defend herself.

After the season ended, Michelle revealed that she now laughs off the cringey incident. “The other girls were freaking out and running around calling people and I’m like okay,” she told RealityTV.com. Luckily she’s put this awful experience behind her!

6 When Angelea Preston Lost Her Crown And Sued For 3M

I bet the network hates being reminded of this cringeworthy scandal. Fans were elated when Angelea Preston, who had won cycle 17, was disqualified from the All Stars show. Her quick disappearance was never addressed by the judges or cast, but we eventually got our answers three years later.

Angelea ended up filing a $3 million lawsuit against Tyra for what she described as being wrongfully kicked off of the show. She claimed she was told to leave after the network discovered she’d been working as an escort for about a year before filming. The single mom said it’s the only way she could make ends meet, but ANTM wasn’t as forgiving.

Angelea alleged that this caused her to lose out on a $100,000 contract with Cover Girl and a photo spread in Vogue Italy. As of 2012, there were clearly still hard feelings between Angelea and the network. She once tweeted the show, “@CWNetwork please don’t use me in your commercials in Buffalo to get girls to audition for that bull sh*t show. Thank you!”
