Renowned rapper Mac Miller sadly passed away in September, 2018. His tragic death was officially ruled an accident, and it was determined that Miller did not know that he was sold counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
But far more significant than the way he died is what Miller — born Malcolm James McCormick — did with his life, however short. By the time Miller passed away just shy of his 27th birthday, he had completed five studio albums to critical and commercial acclaim, collaborated with numerous major artists and produced a bevy of EPs.
In addition to his astounding career success, Miller gained a massive fan following for his down-to-earth persona and ability to find humor and meaning in everyday life. Shortly after his death, the internet exploded once again in an outpouring of love for Miller when his "secret" fake IG account (@cloudywithachanceofawesome69) parodying vaping culture was discovered.
It seems that the discoveries about Miller’s life and death haven’t stopped since then, because we’re still learning more now over a year later. Here’s 20 Things That Have Recently Come to Life About The Late Mac Miller.
20 Three Men Have Been Arrested for His Death
Three men were indicted in October 2019 for distributing the narcotics that lead to Miller’s death. If convicted, they each face a minimum sentence of 20 years behind federal prison bars and potential life sentences without parole. The defendants allegedly continued to distribute the drugs even after they knew of Miller’s death.
19 The Court Case Could a Be Long One
There are a lot of different factors at play here, and so far one of the accused men in Miller’s death, Cameron Pettit, has pleaded not guilty. The two other accused men, Stephen Walter and Ryan Reavis, have so far not entered pleas.
Even if expedited, cases like this often take years to reach a conclusion. If the accused are found guilty and sentenced, they will still be able to appeal.
18 Mac Miller and Mac DeMarco Would Jam Late at Night
Miller’s friendship with fellow singer-songwriter (and fellow “Mac”) Mac DeMarco is nothing new. However, DeMarco recently opened up with more details in an interview with Far Out Magazine.
“Mac was the kind of guy who would call me at 4 am and he’d ask me to come over to his house to play bass guitar on something,” DeMarco said. “And I’d always say yes.”
17 There is an Unauthorized Biography in the Works
Miller’s mother, Karen Meyers, revealed in October 2019 that a writer is currently working on a biography of her son. However, she asked all “artists, management and friends” to not participate in the work, as it is unauthorized and has not been approved by her or his other family members.
It seems Miller's family does not want any biographical works made about their late son at this time, as they have reportedly called for other similar projects to be shut down.
16 Mac’s Father Has Warned Others Against Drug Use
During a celebration of his son’s life on what would have been his 27th birthday, Mark McCormick spoke out via CBS Pittsburgh to warn others about using substances:
“Many of us who were young, including me, experimented with drugs. But it’s a different [explicit] world out there… And the one thing I would say to you is, ‘Don’t take the risk. It’s just not worth it.'”
15 He’s Still Worth a Lot
In September 2019, an appraisal of Miller’s possessions and personal net worth was officially released by the Los Angeles County Court. Even in death, he’s worth far more than most people — over $9 million!
According to the legal documents, Miller’s master recordings of his music alone are worth nearly $5 million.
14 His Voice Lives on in New Releases
Not only did Miller win a posthumous Grammy (for his last-released album, Swimming), but he has also appeared on newly released tracks. Seeing as all collaboration pieces were recorded before his death, it’s unclear just how many more new songs fans will get to hear him on before his recorded material runs out.
13 He and Post Malone Were Going to Make an Album Together
Making everything even more tragic, it turns out that Mac Miller really did have a lot more work left in him. Though hints of a partner-project had come about before, rapper-singer Post Malone confirmed in a September 2019 interview with XXL Magazine that he and his friend Miller had indeed planned to put together a full-length collaborative album together.
12 Miller Was the First Celebrity to Reach Out to Post Malone
In the same interview with XXL, Post Malone revealed some other interesting information about his friendship with the late Miller. Not only had Malone been following Miller’s music since its early days, but Miller was also the “first one” to send him a tweet while Malone himself was coming up.
11 A Documentary on Mac Miller was Canceled
Fans hoping for a documentary will have to wait indefinitely. Although the Canadian production company FortyFPS Productions announced a documentary project on Mac Miller in the months following his death, it was not to be. The company announced on Twitter in June 2019 that they have decided to “hold off” on the project due to concerns from Miller’s family.
