In this day and age, being a celebrity is a very different thing than it was in the past. After all, most stars are expected to let fans into their lives as it is rare for a celebrity to not have at least one social media account they post on regularly.
Even though stars are arguably more accessible today than at any other time in history, it also is clear that their images are carefully crafted in ways that didn’t exist in the past. For example, in years past people would see celebrities starring in commercials from time to time. Instead, current celebrities regularly post images in which they pretend like they use an item in their everyday life and companies pay them huge sums of money for deceiving fans in that way.
Unlike many of her current peers, it has always been very remarkable that Pink appears to be incredibly real about virtually every aspect of her life. For example, in 2020 Pink revealed that she’d been diagnosed with COVID-19, and then she turned a negative into a positive by making soup for those in need and donating $1 million to fight the virus. Even more remarkably, in the early-2010s Pink revealed that her life was going down an extremely destructive route back when she was a teenager.
International Superstar
After initially trying to make it as part of a girl group called Choice, Pink wound up becoming a solo artist that was impactful that she arguably is one of the most important voices of her generation. In fact, Pink has penned and performed so many songs over her awe-inspiring career that she blanked on the lyrics to ‘What About Us?” during a livestream and had to be reminded of them by her daughter.
An extremely acclaimed singer, in 2009 Pink was named the Pop Songs Artist of the Decade by Billboard and she has won so many awards that it would foolhardy to try and list them all here. Also an incredible stage performer, Pink works so hard to make her concerts amazing for fans that her shows would even entertain someone who had never heard her music before.
An Extremely Powerful Song
Due to the fact that Pink has a powerful voice that radiates emotion and her lyrics almost always paint an easy to imagine picture, many of her songs have taken root in the minds of her fans. Despite that, it could be argued that the single most powerful song of her career is “Family Portrait” which appeared on her 2001 album “Missundaztood”.
Focused on Pink’s childhood and her relationship with family during her parent’s divorce, the song is unflinchingly raw which is why it evokes such a visceral reaction in listeners. Willing to reach into a dark period from her past and bring it to life for the masses to behold, releasing a song that was so revealing must have felt like a risky thing for Pink.
Once “Family Portrait” was released as a single and the masses got to hear it for the first time, to say that it meant the world to lots of listeners is an understatement. Of course, Pink must have found it extremely gratifying that so many people could relate to some of her most deeply felt emotions. With that in mind, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she went on to give a powerful performance in a film and was very frank about the times in her life that inspired it.
Pink’s Teen Years
Even though a lot of people may not realize it, during Pink’s time in the spotlight she has taken on a few acting roles. For example, in the 2012 film Thanks for Sharing, she was so great as someone that is addicted to intimate relationships that a rogerebert.com review said "(Pink) does the best acting in the film. Keep in mind, that review said Pink was better in that film than acclaimed actors like Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins, and Josh Gad.
While it took many by surprise that Pink did such a marvelous job portraying an addict in that film, it turns out there is a good reason for that, she was pretty out of control during her teens. “I understand addiction because I was a hard-core partyer from the ages of 12 to 15.”
As revealed in a Los Angeles Times article, Pink’s real-life addiction issues centered on the use of illegal substances. “I was like a candy raver and I was on all the club drugs.” Going further than that, Pink revealed that for several years she was more interested in being under the influence than anything else in her life. “I wasn’t interested in school, sports, hobbies or any of the other supposedly healthy things kids should be into. I just wanted to get high. I was running wild and heading for a fall,”
From there, Pink decided to sell the same substances she was using to other people and she came to believe that the people in her life thought very little of her. “There I was, putting my neck on the line as a young punk dealing hard drugs to gnarly addicts.” “I was the pariah of my school and the shameful specimen of my disjointed family.”
Ultimately, Pink managed to stop using but not before something extremely scary happened, she wound up in a hospital after an “inevitable” near-lethal overdose. Speaking about that incident, Pink said; “I was lucky to survive and, since then, I never touched drugs”.
