This Is How Adam DeVine's Tragic Accident Happened

When Adam DeVine was just 11 years old, he got into a very fatal accident that caused him to almost lose both of his legs. This tragedy happened when Adam tagged along with his friend to a convenience store.

During an interview with the Off Camera Show, The Righteous Gemstones star said, "I was hit by a cement truck when I was 11. I was going to get candy at the convenience store and my friend was across the street, and he goes, 'Come on.' I took it like the coast is clear. But he meant like, I'm a child, 'Come on, let's go get this candy.'"

Adam continued, "I grew up in the suburbs where like 3 cement trucks were going up the hill, 2 were coming down because new houses were being built everywhere. And the third cement truck goes up the hill, he yells, "Come on," I'm on the other side of the street and the other 2 are coming down, so I can't see the other side of the street."

Adam went on, "And, so, I walked out, and I got hit and taken under the wheels and spit out and, just like mangled. I broke everything, except my right femur from the waist down. And then crushed my waist from the knees down. Took all the skin off, broke my ribs, punctured lungs."

Adam went on to say that he was in a medically induced coma for 2 weeks, and he was also in the hospital for under 2 months. He also had about 27 surgeries over the next couple of years.

Adam was in a lot of pain as he revealed in The Armchair Expert Podcast according to People. He said, "It hurt a lot, even with all the drugs. Every adult in my life is standing over me just crying. My dad is like a tough guy. Never saw him cry, and then he’s like shaking and bawling. That’s when I knew it was real.”

Adam also revealed that it's through his traumatic experience that he decided to get into comedy, "I think that’s kind of why I got into comedy. After that, I couldn’t do anything. Anytime anyone would make fun of me, my dad was like, ‘You can’t get into fights so you gotta punch them back with your words, think of some funny things to say back to them.'”

How Did Adam's Parents Find Out About His Accident?

When the accident happened, Adam explained where his parents were, and what they were doing. During an interview with The Off Camera show, he said that his mother Penny DiVine was at the zoo with both of his godmothers. "It was before cell phones," Adam said, "And so she got a little note at the concession stand. She goes like to get a drink and -- the way she tells it, my mum believes a lot in like God, angels, and stuff."

Adam's dad Dennis on the other hand was at home sleeping after working a night shift. They called the home number, but he didn't pick up probably because he was tired from work, so he let it go to the voice machine.
