Live interviews can be incredibly revealing and entertaining. Though on the opposite end of the spectrum, they can also be very awkward to watch, especially when the guest or the host isn't entirely comfortable with something. We've seen oh so many examples of this taking shape in the past. Who can forget David Letterman constantly asking Jennifer Aniston about her dating life, despite the fact that she wasn't willing to answer... The same transpired between Letterman and Angelina Jolie, as the interview was once again hard to watch. At times, even the guests can be off the rails, like say Mark Wahlberg during his interview alongside Graham Norton. In this case, however, fans are blaming it on the interviewer for not following Adam Driver's request.
Adam Driver Hates To Rewatch His Films Or Sing In Them
Adam Driver isn't the first actor to avoid watching himself on the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is actually very common. Jason Momoa also falls in the same category, along with greats like Jamie Foxx. Armie Hammer would also reveal that he'll only watch himself at the premiere out of respect for the project.
“I love movies so much and I love watching them, but if I’m in it, I can’t watch the movie and enjoy it because I’m a self-abusing narcissist who’s like, ‘Why am I doing this? What am I doing [with] that?’ ” explains Hammer.
Even before walking out of the 2019 interview alongside NPR, Driver admitted he hated watching himself back while in an interview alongside Howard Stern back in 2015.
"Cause I don’t want to hear the bad acting that probably was [laughter] happening during that clip,” adding, “I’ve watched myself or listened to myself before, then always hate it. And then wish I could change it, but you can’t.”
That sentiment didn't change and it would cause an awkward and abrupt end to a certain interview.
NPR Played A Clip Of Him Singing, Which Caused Adam Driver To Walkout
Adam Driver isn't a huge fan of singing in films. Even during his most recent project in 'Annette', the star revealed he has no plans to keep singing in the future.
“I don’t have any plans nor not necessarily no interest to sing again in movies. I always love it in movies,” says Driver. “People do sing in life — I mean, burst into the song. But we don’t communicate through song. In a way, it feels more appropriate. There is something more vulnerable about it," he stated alongside The OCR.
Typically, during interviews, the host will play a little sound clip of their work. Adam Driver was not a fan of this process, especially given that the clip featured the actor singing. The host asked Driver to take his headphones if he didn't want to hear but instead, Driver completely walked out of the interview.
'Fresh Air' producer Danny Miller tried defending the show, stating that they gave Driver the option not to listen.
"Knowing that Adam Driver does not like to hear back clips of himself, we invited him to remove his headphones while playing back the clip from ‘Marriage Story,’ which, after all, he was on Fresh Air to talk about.”
It might've come off as harsh for those at the station, but according to fans and certain celebs, Adam Driver was right to have acted the way he did.
Most Fans Defended Adam Driver's Decision To Leave The Interview
The story made headlines across the entertainment world. For the most part, fans agreed with his decision. Even the ladies on 'The View' sided with the 'Star Wars' star, Whoopi Goldberg related to Driver, hating to watch her own work as well.
Fans on Reddit and YouTube would also take the actor's side.
"I do not blame Adam Driver. He is one of the few respectable men left in the industry and this simple request should have been granted. He could've handled this in a much worse way but instead decided to calmly remove himself from the situation. He is not at fault here."
"I can't believe people on an Adam Driver subreddit of all places are labeling him a "Primma Donna". Adam did nothing wrong. He looked after himself. Shame on all of you and your patronizing "guidelines" on how he "should" behave when confronted with a triggering situation."
"They should have just listened to his request, if he doesn't want to see it then don't show it. it's that simple."
Adam Driver's requests should have been met and more power to the actor for standing up and taking matters into his own hands.
