Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most talented women in Hollywood, and she has done a bit of everything at this point in her journey. She has been featured in multiple franchises, has won the most prestigious awards in the business, and has had films make incalculable amounts of money at the box office.
A few years back, Lawrence teamed up with fellow Marvel veteran, Chris Pratt, for the films Passengers. On the surface, this film seemed like a slam dunk, but things did not go exactly as planned.
Interestingly, Lawrence has since admitted than none other than Adele warned her to stay away from the project. In fact, the singer had a genuinely good reason why, and we will explore her reasoning, and the movie's performance down below!
Jennifer Lawrence Starred In Passengers With Chris Pratt
Passengers, a 2016 science fiction film directed by Morten Tyldum, captivated audiences with its unique blend of romance and space exploration. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, the movie offered a fresh take on the challenges of interstellar travel.
Passengers received mixed reviews from critics upon its release. Some praised the performances of Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, noting their chemistry and ability to carry the film. The visual effects and the depiction of the spaceship Avalon were also lauded for their realism and immersive quality.
However, the film faced criticism for its handling of ethical and moral issues, particularly regarding Jim's decision to wake up Aurora without her consent. Some viewers and critics found this aspect troubling and believed it warranted more exploration within the narrative.
Despite the critical divide, Passengers achieved notable success at the box office. The film grossed over $303 million worldwide, making it a commercially successful venture for the studio. Its strong performance can be attributed in part to the star power of Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, both of whom were popular actors at the time of the film's release.
It's been a number of years since the film's release, and recently, Jennifer Lawrence opened up about being warned about the picture by none other than Adele.
Adele Warned Her Not To Star In The Film
In a piece by Variety, it was stated that Lawrence recognized Passengers as a film that did not sight well with fans, and it was something that she grew to agree with.
Said Lawrence, "I was like, ‘Oh no, you guys are here because I’m here, and I’m here because you’re here. Wait, who decided that this was a good movie."
Passengers simply wasn't great, and she took it after being warned about it.
"Passengers,’ I guess. Adele told me not to do it! She was like, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have listened to her," Lawrence continued.
Lawrence isn't wrong. While she has had some great films during her time in Hollywood, she has also had some flops. The actress previously noted that she was not always picking the best projects.
"I was not pumping out the quality that I should have. I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run,'" the actress said.
She also dished on why she was taking projects like Passengers.
"I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life. Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. Nobody’s mad.’ And then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence. So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul," she added.
Thankfully, Lawrence has moved on from that film.
Lawrence Has Done Numerous Films Since
Following Passengers, Lawrence took on projects like Mother!, Red Sparrow, and Dark Phoenix. Not exactly the greatest list of films, but these were soon followed up by an Oscar-nominated flick.
In 2021, Lawrence co-starred in Don't Look Up, which was one of the most-anticipated movies of that year. The film was divisive, but it earned leagues of praise.
A lot of hard work went into bringing the film to life, and Lawrence stated that working with Jonah Hill was particularly tough.
"It was really, really hard filming with Jonah, and just not ruining take after take, laughing. We one time dedicated an entire day to him just improv-ing insults at me. It was amazing," the actress said.
Passengers didn't ruin Jennifer Lawrence's career, and in the years since, she's officially moved on. Talent like this doesn't stay on the sidelines for long.
