In the upcoming HBO Max seriesGreen Lantern, Finn Wittrock will take on the lead role as Guy Gardener/Green Lantern, perDeadline.

The story begins on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, an FBI agent named Alan Scott. Then the narrative shifts to 1984, with half-alien Bree Jarta and Gardener, who is described as a "hulking mass of masculinity, and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism - and yet, somehow likable."

The show will explore their dynamic, with the introduction of other Lanterns, ranging from well-known characters to never-before-seen superheroes.

The new series will be written byGreg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Seth Grahame-Smith. All three writers will serve as executive producers alongside Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter,David Madden, and David Katzenberg. Berlanti Productions will produce the series with Warner Bros. Television.

Wittrock is the only actor confirmed to join the project so far. He took to Instagram to share the exciting news with his followers, in a post that showed a screenshot of the article published byDeadlineearlier this week.

The actor is known for his performance in Ryan Murphy’s FX seriesAmerican Horror Story. Wittrock also worked onAmerican Crime Story, whichearned him an Emmy nomination. He most recently appeared in the first season of Murphy’s Netflix seriesRatched.

The character Guy Gardner was originally created byJohn BroomeandGil Kane,but was changed bySteve EnglehartandJoe Statonfor the Justice League comics in the 1980s and 90s. The team of Lanterns was supposed to be acomedic takeon the stereotypical “hyper-masculine” American male. Gardener's key characteristics still remain the same in the present day.

Staton's design for Gardener was inspired by the character Major Ronald Merrick from the television series TV seriesThe Jewel in the Crown. Staton saw that Merrick had similarities to Gardener, and decided to recreate the character.

HBO Max has ordered 10 one-hour episodes of theGreen Lanternseries. As of right now, a production start date has not been announced, nor have additional cast members or a projected premiere.
