Anna Kendrick does not often give interviews about her romantic life, but she has made some comments through the years that give us a glimpse into her personal life.
In a 2017 interview with Elle, she spoke about how she had dumped a former boyfriend because he did not respect her boundaries. "I was dating a guy. He tickled me playfully, and I said, 'I know that's cute and that people do it, but I really don't like being tickled. It really makes me feel trapped and panicked. I know it's silly and funny for most people, but I really hate it, so could you please not?' Although Kendrick seems to have a good idea of what she wants and doesn't want, this has not always happened as she thought.
"The wrong kind of guy to fall in love with is the guy who will let go of the steering wheel as a joke," she said in a 2015 interview with Fashion magazine (via Us Weekly). "A guy who finds it amusing to make you uncomfortable — which is more common than you'd think — is someone you want to avoid." Anna Kendrick is pretty secretive about her relationship history, but she has spoken out about one ex-boyfriend (she chose not to name names) and how toxic their time together was.
"I was with someone — this was somebody I lived with, for all intents and purposes my husband. We had embryos together, this was my person," she said in the January 2023 interview (via Vanity Fair). "And then about six years in, about somewhere around there, I remember telling my brother, when things had first kind of gone down, 'I'm living with a stranger. Like, I don't know what's happening.'"
She wanted to make things work for a while, and they tried couple's therapy. "It wasn't just the, 'Oh, I'm losing a relationship.' It was that I believed that if we broke up or, you know, if he left basically, it was a confirmation that it's because I'm impossible, I'm lucky that he's even tolerating my bullshit," she explained.
"There was an inherent thing of me being so rejectable that this person who loved me very deeply for six years, it suddenly occurred to him how awful I was or something. The shame that lingers much longer."
