Summary

  • Some Seinfeld guest stars, like Armin Shimerman, were treated poorly on set.
  • Jason Alexander confirmed not everyone had a great time on the welcoming set.
  • However, others, like Keith Hernandez and Larry Thomas, had positive experiences.

Seinfeld remains a steadfast presence on television, and it's all thanks to being one of the best shows ever made. The series featured classic episodes, an impressive list of guest stars who played their roles well, and a finale that left both fans and cast members deeply unsatisfied.

As for the show's guest stars, there's no denying that landing Seinfeld was a huge opportunity. However, it's slowly been revealed that working on set wasn't all that fun.

Let's hear about how one Seinfeld guest star was treated poorly.

Armin Shimerman Had An Unpleasant Time With An Unwelcoming Seinfeld CastArmin Shimerman

Being friendly on set seems like a no-brainer, but apparently, things weren't always great for guest stars on Seinfeld.

Armin Shimerman, who was able to snag a guest spot on the show, has talked about his experience on set. Sadly, he didn't have a great time working on one of the best shows in history.

At Florida SuperCon, he was asked about his experience, replying, "I hated them – hated them. They were non-communative, ugly, non-responsive, what’s the word? Insular."

He then gave some details about his experience.

"Nobody said a word to me except cues. Nobody, nobody came up and started a conversation," he said.

He then talked about being excluded from conversation while with Jerry and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

"The three of us are sitting there, it’s Christmas time. The two of them are talking about their Christmas plans and what they’re going to do for their vacation and and all this stuff and they talk for half an hour. I’m between them, right here, never once, not once did they say what are you going to do? Never once did they say a pardon us for talking around you. Never once. It was as though I wasn’t there," he added.

This must have been an incredibly uncomfortable experience for the veteran actor, who's been on plenty of sets during his career.

"If you have a guest star, if you have a day player, if you have an extra, you do not avoid them. You speak to them. We’re all human beings together.” He added that it wasn’t acceptable, and that he wasn’t very fond of them," he said.

This situation was recently discussed by Jason Alexader, who played George Costanza on the show.

Jason Alexander spoke with Wayne Knight on the Really? No, Really? Podcast, and asked about how the cast was on set.

"So, recently, I've seen um, uh, there was an actor named Armin Shimerman who did an episode of our show, and I saw something about Keith Hernandez. Both of which…Armin said that our cast was very unwelcoming to him. He felt like he was not appreciated at all. Keith Hernandez said I, in particular, I think the word was ‘standoffish.’ I always thought we were, and I'm not looking for a compliment here, I thought we were kind of a welcoming set. We were excited about people," Alexander asked.

“Have you ever been on another show?" Knight replied

“Yeah.”

“And then you still think that?” Knight jokingly asked.

It was a funny and illuminating moment, as Alexander got confirmation that things weren't always great for Seinfeld guest stars.

Now, to be fair, some people did have a good time on the show.

The aforementioned Keith Hernandez did have a good time, but confirmed that Alexander was distant.

Hernandez said, "[Series co-creator] Larry [David] was very friendly and welcoming," Hernandez said. "Jerry was a little sheepish but welcoming. Julia Louis-Dreyfus was about three months pregnant with her first child, I believe. She probably wasn't feeling that great, but she was wonderful to work with. Jason Alexander was a little standoffish most of the week. Michael Richards was very inquisitive about baseball. He knew nothing about it and questioned me throughout the week. He was interested in the lifestyle and what my profession contained. It was wonderful. He was very sweet, a nice man."

Larry Thomas, who played Soup Nazi, had a good experience.

"I've never worked with a director and producer who had less ego than Jerry Seinfeld,” Thomas said.

"And I thought for sure that was the death knell about the character, I wasn't going to get it. But I did get it, and as soon as I walked onto the soundstage, Jerry beelined over to me and he said, ‘You know what, man? Forget about the direction I gave you. Just do what you did when you walked in," he added.
