Matt Reeves’ The Batman hit theaters around the world in March 2022, and was received with widespread acclaim. The intention behind the film was to kickstart a fresh Batman film trilogy, laying the foundation for a standalone Batman-centric shared universe, distinct from the DCEU.
The Robert Pattinson-led project was a resounding success, with critics praising most aspects of the production. The film broke multiple box office records as well, on the way to an impressive global haul of $772.2 million.
The writing had been on the wall before the movie even premiered, with fans obsessing over Pattinson’s Batman voice, as well as a teaser of a raunchy scene involving the Twilight star and Zoë Kravitz.
With similar levels of excitement seen among fans for the first sequel, a lot of them have been left frustrated with the production being postponed multiple times. At the same time, there are those who are preaching patience.
The Batman 2 Was Initially Set For An October 2025 Release
In January 2023, a report on Variety confirmed plans for The Batman 2 to open in theaters on October 3, 2025. The news had originated from co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, in a press event held on the Warner Bros. lot that month.
Confirmation of the sequel had officially arrived at Cinemacon months before, in April 2022. At the same event, it was also revealed that Pattinson would be returning as Batman, while Reeves would be taking on helming duties once again.
The project gained even more traction when the official title was confirmed: The Batman - Part II. All these milestones kept fans believing that the film was on track to premiere in October 2025, but those hopes were dashed when the date was eventually put back by one year.
With the original release date, filming would have ideally kicked off in the early months of 2024. By March, however, Deadline confirmed that the new release date set by Warner Bros. Pictures would be October 2, 2026.
Many Fans Are Frustrated By The Delays To The Batman - Part II
It is not just the critics who were effusive in their praise of the first film in the intended The Batman trilogy. The audience reviews featured on Rotten Tomatoes were just as gushing, and the clamor of a sequel could already be picked out from there.

“They gave us a detective batman who is still learning and is still flawed. The character development really showed from beginning to end. Can't wait for number 2,” a verified audience reviewer commented on the site.
This anticipation has, however, festered into frustration, after the release of The Batman - Part II was delayed by a whole year. On one thread confirming the news on Reddit, multiple “disappointed” GIFs can be found in the comment section, including one captioned, “Well, I want to die.”
One of the major frustrations with the delays to The Batman 2 is the fact that the first film was set in the very early years of Batman’s vigilante campaign in Gotham City. One fan said: “Damn, by the time this movie gets released Pattinson will be 40... Not saying he won’t look or act the part well, but that’s a bummer.”
Other Fans Are Preaching Patience For The Batman - Part II
For fans to get to enjoy The Batman, a lot of patience and perseverance went into the work, certainly on Robert Pattinson’s part. To start with, the actor was said to have been pushed “to breaking point” by the direction of Matt Reeves.
It was also reported that the actor made history as the lowest-paid Batman, although the success of that inaugural film means that that will in all likelihood change when he eventually returns for Part II. At the same time, Pattinson did not have the greatest experience on the film’s set, as he struggled with his mental health.
Still, he persevered, and there are those who feel that patience is the least fans can give Pattinson and the rest of the team. On X, one such optimist wrote: “Those reasons [for the delay] are a good sign it’s going to be a great sequel.”
The comment was on a post claiming that the two main reasons for the delay was a “lack of available stages for filming,” and the script not being ready due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes.
