Below Deck Mediterranean fans have come to expect a significant amount of drama each season between the crew. Perhaps one of the most explosive sources of tension throughout the show's nine-season run was between Captain Sandy Yawn and former Chief Stew, Hannah Ferrier.
Despite Hannah being fired from Below Deck back in Season 5, there's still a heavy amount of viewer interest in the feud between her and Captain Sandy. While Hannah has seemingly moved on from the show for the most part, Captain Sandy is still often asked questions about where she stands with the former reality TV star, and her latest comment is a surprisingly positive one.
Captain Sandy And Hannah Ferrier Bury The Hatchet
During a July 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Captain Sandy responded to a virtual fan who was curious about the status of her relationship with Hannah. Any bad blood that existed between them appears to be a thing of the past based on Sandy's answer.
"Hannah's a great person, and we're in a great space. It was wonderful, and I met her husband, Josh. It was lovely. I went to her house. We hung out."
Fans took to social media to react to the unexpected reconciliation, with one viewer on X stating, "How can you not be a fan of Captain Sandy! I'm happy Sandy & Hannah hung out." Another comment on the thread was equally thrilled for the duo, writing, "Cap Sandy, good for you making up with Hannah! I am so glad that she is happy, as are you! Congrats!"
The highly anticipated face-to-face between Captain Sandy and Hannah came amid Sandy doing press in Australia for Season 9 of Below Deck Med. Sandy expressed her desire for a meet-up with Hannah for a "great talk" which led to long overdue "healing."
Things started on a solid note for Captain Sandy and Hannah in her first season, but it wasn't long before tension began to build between the two. Hannah was often placed at the center of blame if things did not go well for the interior crew. As Chief Stew, it was Hannah's job to ensure a smooth operation inside the super yacht, but things did not always go according to plan.
Hannah's relationship with Conrad Empson in Season 3 of Below Deck Med led to a significant decrease in the quality of Hannah's work. Considering how much Below Deck Mediterranean guests pay to be on the show, Sandy's disappointment is not surprising. With Hannah distracted, and Conrad distracted from his position on the exterior deck crew, things did not go smoothly for charters that season.
Hannah suffered from several panic attacks that season, something which would play a pivotal role in her Season 5 firing. However, Hannah is far from the only Chief Stew in Below Deck Med history.
Below Deck Med Chief Stew's Throughout The Years
Since Hannah's exit, the position has been a revolving door with nobody lasting more than one season.
Chief Stew | Season |
---|---|
Hannah Ferrier | 1-5 |
Christine "Bugsy" Drake | 5 |
Katie Flood | 6 |
Natasha "Tasha" Webb | 7 |
Tumi Mhlongo | 8 |
Aesha Scott | 9 |
Season 5 was tumultuous for Captain Sandy and Hannah's relationship, with a lot of conflict and tension building from the beginning. The drama between them boiled over when her costar, Malia White, reported Hannah for having substances on board. The substances in question were revealed to be the antianxiety medication Valium, and a CBD vape pen.
Upon learning of what Hannah was in possession of, Captain Sandy swiftly brought her into the office, something that left Hannah confused at first. While the anxiety suffered by Hannah is true, she still violated the procedure regarding the medication found on board. During the Below Deck Med after show, Hannah commented on her state of mind after being thrust into Captain Sandy's office in such a cryptic manner.
"It was very strange because I was taken like into Sandy's office, and I think I was really confused at first because when she said like ,'It's been brought to my attention that you have drugs on board,' I was honestly confused at the start, and then she showed me the photo, and I was like 'ah. Ah. That's my Valium.'"
Captain Sandy maintains that she did nothing wrong, despite any assertions from Hannah that she was wrongly let go midseason. Beyond Below Deck Med, Sandy is an actual Captain and therefore has a lot of responsibility to protect the crew and charter guests. Later on during the after-show, Captain Sandy delved deeper into the decision to abruptly eject Hannah from her Chief Stew role after uncovering the substances.
Having to share that with her was heartwrenching for me. I took no pleasure in it. I have to follow protocol. That's why structure's in place. We have manuals. When you discover drugs on board, this is the course you take.
Since their last interaction on Below Deck Med, life has drastically changed for both Captain Sandy and Hannah. For Sandy, she married her long-time girlfriend, Leah Shafer. The wedding took place on none other than a super yacht, something Sandy's quite accustomed to.
For Hannah, she found love after the reality series, marrying Josh Roberts in March 2022. Before the wedding, the couple also welcomed a baby girl, Ava Grace. Regardless of what occurred between Sandy and Hannah in the past, both women have changed in the four years since their last interaction, paving the way for the olive branch to be extended.
