A damsel in distress running up the stairs, a haunted spirit that won't leave a house, a monster wreaking havoc on a town or city. These are all things that we're used to seeing in horror films, and movies in this genre can either be really amazing or really poorly done.
Every time we watch a horror movie, whether it's a classic that we've loved since forever or it's a new release, we can't help but ask one question: would this really happen in real life? It's definitely interesting to think about how realistic and logical a horror movie is.
Here are some of the greatest horror movies that have been made, and we put them on this list according to how likely they are to actually happen.
15 A Killer Video Tape Isn't The Most Believable
While The Ring is a super popular movie, it's got to be the most unrealistic one out there. Could a video tape actually kill you after you watch it?
Definitely not... and we're glad to hear that because that would be pretty freaky. It's scary enough watching this 2002 film.
14 Stories Can't Become True Like The Well-Crafted Movie, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark
The 2019 film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a well-crafted adaptation of a children's book series by illustrator Stephen Gammell and writer Alvin Schwartz.
But while it's beautiful to watch and a cool concept, it's super unrealistic. Stories can't actually become true. (Phew. Again, we're feeling very grateful for that.)
13 Nicole Kidman's Character In The Others Realizes She's Actually A Spirit, Which Can't Be Real
Some people believe in spirits and others say no way. But no matter where we stand on that debate, we know that The Others can't happen in real life.
Nicole Kidman realizes that she and her children are actually ghosts, and that's just not something that is going to happen.
12 Sometimes Neighbors Are Strange, But A Vampire Next Door Is A Stretch
Let Me In was released in 2010 and is a remake of the 2008 Swedish horror movie Let The Right One In.
Even though neighbors can definitely be strange and we've probably all experienced that, we know that no one living on our street or in our apartment building is going to be a vampire.
11 Everyone Has An Evil Doppelganger In Jordan Peele's Us, Which Couldn't Happen
Jordan Peele's horror movie, Us, was much anticipated after the success of Get Out. In this movie, everyone has an evil doppelganger, which couldn't happen.
Thinking about an underground world that mirrors the one up above with people who look just like us? Yeah, that gave us nightmares. And speaking of nightmares...
10 We're Not Sure About People Dying Off In Their Dreams...
A Nightmare On Elm Street is a very scary movie, but it's not realistic, thankfully.
People die in their dreams because of an evil figure named Freddy Krueger, and that's not going to be possible in real life. If we re-watch this classic horror flick, we have to remind ourselves that it's not real.
9 Devil Worship Doesn't Go As Far As In Rosemary's Baby
Rosemary's Baby is one of the most classic horror films out there and in it, devil worship goes super far. Mia Farrow's character, Rosemary, realizes that a sinister plot to take over her baby has taken place and that there are Satan worshippers in her very own apartment building. Nope, this couldn't happen, either.
8 Some Families Have Weird Relationships Like The Mother/Son Bond In Psycho
The 1960 horror film Psycho is super famous and tells the story of Norman Bates and his mother, Norma.
Some families do have weird relationships like this mother/son bond, so of all the horror movies out there, this one is a bit more realistic. It's easy to imagine something along these lines happening.
7 While The Shining Is Of Course Fiction, Many People Share Stories Of Haunted Hotels
Stephen King's horror story The Shining is fascinating, and even though it's fictional, many people share stories of creepy or haunted hotels. A lot of people have said that they actually had spirit encounters. It seems like this film is pretty realistic when we think about it in that way.
6 It's Easy To Imagine Celebrity Obsession Turning Dark, Like In Stephen King's Misery
While we would hope that the horror movie Misery never comes true, it does seem like it's more realistic than some other scary films.
It's a tale of when celebrity obsession turns dark, and it's easy to imagine this happening in real life. We would definitely hope that it wouldn't, though.
