Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, better known for his stage name Big Sean, began his music career at the ripe age of 19 years old after getting signed to rap icon Kanye West's record label, GOOD Music, in 2007.
Big Sean's career has been nothing less than successful. He's been nominated for numerous awards along with many of his songs charting on various music boards.
During his career, however, Big Sean endured a startling illness that almost impacted his career. Thankfully, Big Sean was able to seek help from a holistic doctor who he vows saved his health.
Big Sean's Illness Almost Altered His Health And Ruined His Career
In March 2021, Big Sean appeared alongside speaker, author, and former monk Jay Shetty to discuss Big Sean's perspectives on spirituality, health, and the trajectory of his career.
During the interview, Jay Shetty asked Big Sean about his self-care practices. This came after Big Sean made it known that self-care was an essential part of being, not only an artist in the music industry but also a human being trying to better himself.
As Big Sean detailed his recent diet cleanse, he seamlessly began talking about a heart condition he had at the start of his music career at 19 years old.
"I had heart palpitations, and it got so bad that I couldn't walk from one side of the room to the other side of the room without being short-breathed. I passed out in the shower, went to the hospital."
After Big Sean went to the hospital, he was told by doctors that he would have to have surgery while facing two options for managing his heart condition: either get a pacemaker inserted in his heart or undergo a surgical cut to the heart which will scar it (this scar would allow electric currents to pass through).
Big Sean refused to choose either option and instead sought help from a holistic doctor who practices alternative medicine. This doctor prescribed Big Sean magnesium (among other things) for two weeks and the results were miraculous, to say the least.

Big Sean told Jay Shetty that he returned to the doctor who presented him with the surgical options, and after doing more tests, the doctor found that his heart condition was cured.
Due to the severity of Big Sean's heart disease and the effects it had on everyday activities such as walking across a room, his career wouldn't be what it is today had he not found the proper help to cure his disease.
Big Sean Prefers Alternative Medicine To Westernized Medicine
Alongside Big Sean sharing his experience of having a life-altering disease, he shared a similar encounter that led to him preferring the use of alternative remedies based on Eastern traditions compared to Western medicine.
As the story goes, Big Sean's second encounter with holistic medicine came after an unfortunate knee injury that made it unbearable and difficult to walk while he was on tour. Similar to his heart disease diagnosis and recommended procedures, Big Sean was told that he would have to have screws implanted in his knee permanently. "My mom was like 'I don't accept that,' right?" This was followed by Big Sean and his mom going to professionals who specialized in stem cell research.
After putting his trust in the hands of the stem regenerative specialists, Big Sean said that his cartilage regenerated by 98 percent, which was previously said by traditional doctors wasn't possible without surgery.
This encounter led Big Sean to become an unofficial spokesperson for alternative medicine. He often talks about his preference for alternative medicine in interviews and songs. Take his song "Lucky Me," for example.
"Man, lucky me / I was diagnosed with a heart disease at nineteen / Could barely stand on my feet / Doctors said they had to cut it open / Put a pacemaker on it to put it back on beat / Till my mama took me to holistic doctors / And they prescribed me magnesium for two weeks / Went back to the regular doctors, and they said, 'Huh damn, looks like we don't need to proceed' / That's how I know that western medicine weak."

Big Sean's newfound appreciation for the role alternative medicine played in his healing journey is clear, and Big Sean's epiphany is similar to that of Tina Turner and her profound appreciation for Buddhism in relation to her illnesses and life struggles.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Big Sean felt compelled to share his health complications and experiences with healing because he's "never talked about certain things in [his] life." After opening up about his journey in "Lucky Me," it made him even more aware of the benefits that come from opening up.
Big Sean Credited His Mom For His Holistic Health Practices
"We get lucky, right, with our parents," Big Sean said to Jay Shetty after talking about his holistic healing journey. "They say that we choose our parents... I chose the right one for sure."
Big Sean did not hesitate to give credit to his mom, Myra Anderson, for the guidance she gave him on his healing journey. According to Big Sean, Myra's interest and faith in alternative medicine is what encouraged him to be open to it and choose it over traditional medicine.
So it is safe to say that if it wasn't for his mother, Big Sean would have a pacemaker and permanent screws in his knee. Two things that would've prevented Big Sean from being the Big Sean we know today. However, it should be noted that just because this form of medicine appears to have worked for Big Sean, doesn't mean it is right for everyone. Therefore, it's important to consult one's doctor before taking any of the steps listed above.
