Summary

  • Carrie Underwood triumphed in American Idol Season 4, launching a successful career in country music.
  • Bo Bice, her 2005 runner-up, faced personal challenges but still holds no animosity towards Underwood.
  • Underwood's achievements post-Idol, including 8 Grammys, solidify her as one of the show's greatest winners.

Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice have both come a long way since they went head to head in the 2005 finale of American Idol. The Muskogee-born songstress emerged victorious in what was still only the fourth season of the popular singing competition.

Idol aired on Fox for 15 seasons until 2016, before taking a two-year hiatus. The show returned on ABC in 2018. More than six years later, and nearly two decades since Underwood triumphed in Season 4, a report emerged in August 2024, claiming that she would be returning to her roots in the show, to replace the departing Katy Perry as a judge.

Underwood’s trajectory has mostly been a consistently upward one since 2005. While the same could be said in some ways of Bo Bice, he has also endured some significant personal challenges. These have undoubtedly impacted his career over the years, but he has persisted nonetheless.

Fans think Katy Pery's “main character syndrome” was very obvious in one episode of American Idol.

So, as Underwood prepares to step into Perry’s shoes on Idol, what is the state of her relationship with her Season 4 finale nemesis, Bice?

How Close Was The Season 4 Finale Of American Idol Between Carrie Underwood And Bo Bice?

The fourth season of American Idol aired from January 18 to May 25, 2005. Ryan Seacrest served as the host, while the judging panel included returning members Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell.

In this season, the age limit was increased to 28 for the first time to allow a wider range of participants. This change benefited contestants like Constantine Maroulis but also Bo Bice, who were among the oldest and most seasoned contestants on Idol.

There were calls for Bice to take the crown, with one fan saying that Underwood had been “very boring,” while Bo had apparently had more “interesting song choices” and “memorable moments.” In the end, with a total of 37 million votes cast for the finale, she was announced the fourth ever winner of the reality competition.

Underwood’s victory was vindicated by her immense success in the decades after the show. By the time the Oklahoma native’s return as a judge was confirmed in 2024, she had sold well over 80 million records worldwide.

While Carrie Underwood is now seen as a rightful winner of American Idol, victory would have likely not felt as assured back in 2005. A tense finale could not have helped things, either, with tens of millions of votes and a massive prize at stake.

Bo Bice lost out despite those in his corner who felt he had been more deserving. Despite their heated competition, Underwood would later insist that she left what had been a hard season with no bad blood.

“Idol was probably the most horrifying thing, because I had never been away from my hometown like that before,” the Blown Away singer told Parade Magazine in 2015. “[But in the end], I always kept in my head, ‘If nothing else ever comes of this, I got to do the coolest thing ever and I won American Idol!’”

Not many people would begrudge Bo Bice some sense of animosity towards Carrie Underwood, especially given the success she went on to achieve after beating him in Season 4 of American Idol. This, in reality, is not the case with the musician from Huntsville, Alabama.

Carrie Underwood's Notable Achievements Since American Idol

  • Inside Your Heaven, Carrie's first single debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2005.
  • Jesus, Take the Wheel sold over two million copies and was certified double Platinum by The Recording Industry Association of America
  • In February, Carrie won her first two Grammy Awards: "Best New Artist" and "Best Female Country Vocal Performance" for Jesus, Take the Wheel
  • Carrie went on to win six more Grammys, including "Best Roots Gospel Album" for My Savior in 2022.

As a matter of fact, Bice argued that his competitor’s achievements in the aftermath of her win have simply further justified that victory.

“I think over the last decade Carrie has shown that not only was she worthy of the crown of being an American Idol winner, but she has had a wonderful solo career and I am extremely proud of her,” Bice said to Upside Adelaide, speaking about his time on the show.

The See the Light musician continued by emphasizing that he, too, had nothing but fond memories of Idol and Underwood. “If there were any tears shed,” he said, “it was only out of joy because there’s not a lot of people who get to see all of their dreams come true in one night. And they get to see their fellow friend’s dreams come true.”

Bo Bice Has Faced Challenges In His Personal Life

Bo Bice was very gracious in acknowledging Carrie Underwood as a deserving winner of their season of American Idol. He would also probably insist, however, that he was just as worthy of his place in that finalist podium as his opposite contestant was.

With the argument also finding merit with some in the public arena, it might not be an unfair case to make that the challenges Bice has faced in his personal life could have held him back from doing as well as Underwood has done in her career.

In the same year that he came second on Idol, Bice’s son Aidan was born, and he released The Real Thing, his solo debut album. Unfortunately, he also started to develop medical complications.

Bice was mostly suffering from a recurring intestinal problem, which even required emergency surgery to clear a blockage in his intestine. However, he fought on to keep not just his career going, but his family as well.

The Season 4 finale of American Idol aired on May 25, 2005. About four weeks later, Bice got married to his long-term girlfriend Caroline Fisher. After their first son Aidan, the couple welcomed two more in 2008 and 2010. The family lives in Covington, Georgia.
