Each year, the Oscars grace TV screens across the globe to celebrate the film world. Fans get to see their favorite celebrities dressed up to accept acting awards and more.
Over the years, however, there have been some highly controversial moments at the event. Which problematic celebs have since been banned from attending the ceremony?
Will Smith's Violent Scene Got His Suspended
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars resulted in major backlash. Though he claimed he was defending his wife Jada (about whom Chris had made a joke while onstage), The Academy decided to ban Will from attending the Oscars for the next ten years.
Those who watched the moment will clearly remember Will's outburst:
Keep my wife's name out your f******* mouth!
Several Men Are Banned Due To Sexual Misconduct
Even more disturbing is the long list of celebrities who are banned because of sexual assault allegations against them. This includes disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, comedian Bill Cosby, cinematographer Adam Kimmel, and director Roman Polanski (who was convicted of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor).
An article on IMDB noted The Academy's determination to make sure that the ceremony was a safe space that did not tolerate this type of behavior:
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences makes sure that those who violate their code of conduct are no longer welcome.
Let us hope the trend continues of speaking out and not allowing this type of behavior to happen.
