Are Cher And Meryl Streep Friends In Real Life?
In Hollywood, there are lots of movie stars who have talked about how shallow relationships among actors can be. After seemingly becoming close with a co-star while working together, actors often move on and never are a regular part of each other's lives again.
In 1983, the movie Silkwood was released and became a major hit with moviegoers and critics alike. In that biographical movie, Meryl Streep and Cher co-starred as best friends who went through a harrowing situation together.
By the time Silkwood began production, Streep was already one of the most respected actors in the world and Cher was a novice. Talking to People, Cher once described what she assumed meeting Streep would be like and what the reality was. Thanks to that reality, Cher and Streep quickly began a friendship that beat the odds by lasting.
“I thought it was going to be like having an audience with the Pope. The first day on location, Meryl just came up, threw her arms around me, and said, ‘I’m so glad you’re here.’ She’s all communication and warmth and friendship, with a great sense of humor.”
In 1988, Cher and Steep were nominated for Oscars in the same category. When Cher won, Streep noticeably jumped up to celebrate. Once Cher made her way onstage, she thanked Streep and paid tribute to their bond.
“I feel so unbelievable that I did my first movie with her, and now I was nominated with her, and I feel really thankful.”
Decades later in 2018, Cher talked about starring with Streep in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Cher marveled at the lasting bond she shares with Streep. "We've stayed friends all these years. I cannot believe that, but [Silkwood] was my first film, and she helped me. I mean, she was unbelievable, because I had no idea what I was doing."
How Did Meryl Streep And Cher Save A Woman?
During Cher's life, she has achieved more in the entertainment business than almost anyone else in history. A highly successful actor and singer who performed with her ex-husband Sonny Bono and as a solo artist, it has often seemed like Cher had the Midas touch. If that wasn't impressive enough, Cher has also become an icon for the LGBTQ+ community.
Given everything that Cher has done with her life, millions of people would love to interview her. While that obviously is impossible, Cher did give her fans a chance to ask her questions.
In 2013, Cher participated in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session. During that session, Cher was asked many interesting questions but one of them revealed a truly incredible story. "What happened when you and Meryl Streep saved a girl from being mugged?"
In response that question, Cher went on to tell the story about how she and Streep came to a scared woman's defense. Based on Cher's story, there is no denying that she and Streep became a crime-fighting duo for one night.
As Cher explained, she and Streep intended to have a perfectly innocent night. Then the pair came across a woman who desperately needed help.
"Well - Meryl had just had Mimi and wanted to get some ice cream, she was just telling me what a safe neighborhood it is. It's little Italy bordering on Chinatown. We walked around the corner, there was this huge guy ripping this girl's clothes and trying to get her purse."
Since Cher and Streep didn't have any kind of weapons to help themselves or the woman, they could have prioritized their own safety. Even if they walked away, the two famed performers could have tried to get help from the police. Perhaps Streep decided there wasn't enough time for that. No matter what Streep was thinking she acted and Cher quickly joined in.
"Meryl just took off and starting yelling running towards them. Then I did too. The guy got frightened and started running towards US!!! I thought great, we saved the girl and now we're going to get killed."
Surprisingly, Cher didn't write anything more about the mugger. As a result, it seems safe to assume that after initially running at the two stars, the guy took off. What Cher did make clear, however, is that she and Streep made their way to the mugger's victim.
"When we got to the girl, she was completely shaken up. Her dress was ripped and she was crying. We kind of patted her, and we started talking to her, and we asked her if she needed help going anywhere or doing anything. She said she was a singing waitress."
After almost being mugged and clearly being roughed up, the girl Cher and Streep saved would have had her adrenaline pumping. As a result, it makes sense that it took her a moment to realize the identity of the women who came to her defense.
Thankfully, Cher described the moment the woman they saved realized who her heroes were. "Then she started screaming 'Oh my god I was just saved by Meryl Streep and Cher!!!!'"
Cher finished her story by revealing that she and Streep weren't the only ones who witnessed what was happening. According to Cher, once everything calmed down, she noticed that there were two people there who watched everything play out.
"Then we looked over and there were two men standing there and they didn't do anything. These two big a*****e men just watched her."
Based on Cher's description, she and Streep were more heroic than those two men that night. Not only that, that night Streep and Cher did something more heroic than most action movie stars ever will.
