Award-winning musician Chris Brown is no stranger to controversy. He is as famous for his career as he is for his personal life.

Over the years, Brown has had run-ins with the law, and has made headlines for the wrong reasons. One person who's stayed by Brown's side and supported him through it all, is his mother, Joyce Hawkins.

Hawkins is Brown's biggest fan and has defended him since his first brush with the law.

From an assault charge and several assault allegations to controversial lyrics about black women to more serious allegations, Chris' mom never left his side. And despite his many assault charges, the singer's career keeps flourishing.

This leaves many people wondering why his music keeps selling and asking why he keeps getting movie roles. But fans also wonder what Chris' mom really thinks of her son's checkered past.

Hawkins Didn't Make Excuses For Chris After He Assaulted Rihanna

In 2009, Brown was at the height of his career and was dating music superstar and businesswoman, Rihanna. Unfortunately, police records show that Chris assaulted Rihanna, leaving visible marks on her face and arms afterward.

Brown was charged with felony assault, which he pled guilty to and later received five years probation and community service for. He was also ordered to attend domestic violence counseling for a year.

The assault came as a shock to both his fans and peers, as, at the time, the star had no priors. Perhaps it was even more shocking to his mother.

Following the incident, Hawkins told PEOPLE, "I explained to him that in no way [was] what he did right or acceptable. And I just explained to him that if something of this magnitude ever happened again, what he should do – walk away from any situation and never involve yourself like that ever again."

She went on to add, "I’ve never seen any violence in Chris, ever. There was never a history of violence. He's always been my little angel."

She Hasn't Spoken About Recent Allegations Against Him

The 'Loyal' singer has had several run-ins with the law over the years. He has been in altercations that ended violently, had numerous assault allegations against him, and has been charged many times.

In 2017, his ex Karraueche Tran was granted a five year restraining order against the singer. It was alleged that Brown had threatened Tran with violence via text messages.

In 2019, Chris found himself in more trouble with the law. He was detained in Paris after a woman accused him of rape and filed a complaint. He was later released without charges.

That year, the singer also received backlash over his controversial song lyrics. In his song 'Need a Stack,' Brown sang that he only wanted to be intimate with black women with nice hair.

After his fans called him out on it, the singer started a challenge, asking the "angry uglies to post pictures of themselves."

After the Rihanna assault, which she condemned, Hawkins stayed silent about the other charges and allegations against her son. Although, she took to Instagram to defend him following the backlash from his "nice hair" lyrics.

Hawkins Is A Victim Of Domestic Violence Herself

Brown has undoubtedly done some horrific things over the years that have left the internet divided. Some die-hard fans believe he deserves a second, third, or fourth chance.

Surprisingly, Brown even threw a rock through his mother's car window once, and her support of him has never wavered.

However, there are those who believe that Brown is unrepentant and should continue to held accountable for the violence he's allegedly subjected several people to over the years.

The singers mother is a victim of domestic abuse. Per Today, the "Look at me now" singer, told Giant magazine that his stepfather used to beat his mom. At 11 years old, Chris told his mother that he'd go to jail for ending his stepfather's life with a baseball bat.

He further told the magazine, "He used to hit my mom … He made me terrified all the time, terrified like I had to pee on myself. I remember one night he made her nose bleed. I was crying and thinking, ‘I’m just gonna go crazy on him one day,’ I hate him to this day."

Brown's former stepfather Donnell Hawkins denied these claims, stating that he never raised a hand to Joyce. Donnell is currently blind from accidentally shooting himself in the eye after an alleged failed suicide attempt.

Brown touched on Donnell's condition, saying, "When you're blind, your senses are heightened, like your smell, hearing, your sense of touch. You can move and maneuver around your sight."

He alluded to the fact that his stepfather's condition didn't stop him from abusing the singer's mother. While it's no excuse for his behavior as an adult, perhaps there's more to Chris' mom's defense of his poor behavior than meets the eye.
