Grammy-award winner Chris Stapleton has revealed that he was a big fan of Snoop Dogg as a teen. In a ’60 Minutes’ interview for CBS News, the singer offered an intimate insight into his life as an acclaimed country star, reminiscing about his time as a teen with a “starter mustache” and showing off glimpses of his impressively vast guitar collection.
In response to interviewer Sharyn Alfonsi quipping “It's hard to think about you, rollin' around listening to Snoop Dogg”, Stapleton replied:
Stapleton Revealed He Was Impressed By How 'Real' Snoop Dogg Was
“Yeah, it was-- you know, it was some of the realist it was so real that it translated even to some kid in eastern Kentucky who had no notion of the things that he was talking about, you know.”
When asked whether his use of the word ‘real’ was a reference to authenticity, Chris affirmed that it was. “Well, I think it was. It was dangerous too and real and dangerous are very appealing to you know 15 -16-year-old kids.”
Stapleton allowed the cameras to document his Nashville ‘band cave’ – a rehearsal space bursting with Chris’ many awards and some of his most cherished guitars. Singling out one of the instruments he declared “This is number one.”
“If I had to have one guitar, and you know it was an electric guitar, this would be the one I'd take with me and the rest of them do other things and I love them very dearly but this one this one is the one that I would take.”
Stapleton Confessed "I'm Not A Great Guitar Player"
He then confessed “Any guitar player, like, real, you know, technically skilled trained guitar player will tell you that I'm not a great guitar player…”
“…I mean I think I have a good sense of doing what I do. I'm probably more of a stylist than I am-- somebody who can do anything. I'm good at being me on guitar.”
Chris also disclosed that he very nearly didn’t become a musician as he at first chose to embark on the starkly different career path of an engineer. However, he divulged that he “Met somebody who was a songwriter.”
“And then it was just like, that's a job? They're gonna pay you to sit in a room and make things up on guitar? That's m-- that's the-- I need that job. That's the job I want.”
