Conan O'Brien Revealed His "Irish Trait" Helped Him Stay Focused Early On In His Career
Speaking alongside Vulture, O'Brien took part in a lengthy interview looking back at his career. It was Conan's Irish Good-bye.
Conan spoke about how he was able to stay grounded throughout his career, and a major reason for it came from the influences he had around him.
"Where I got really lucky is my parents and my siblings. I come from really good people, and I come from people — and it might be an Irish trait — but in a good way, they don’t give a sh--."
Conan continues, "They’re proud of me, but none of that has anything to do with my being a son or a brother. I come from a family where there’s no escaping who you are. There is no becoming a different person or putting on airs or saying, “Hey, by the way, in case you didn’t notice, I’ve won some Emmys, so I think maybe it’s time people started giving me my due around here.” If I ever said anything like that, the first response would be to laugh really hard in my face, and the second response would be to throw me out the second-story kitchen window of our house on Kennard Road in Brookline."
Despite all the fame and fortune throughout his career, the former late night host never forgot where he came from.
"Something that was ground into me at a very young age that has carried me even through those dark years when I was desperate [or] ambitious: I never forgot that I am the third kid of six and where I’m from and how I’m supposed to behave. So that I cannot take credit for."
At the moment, fans can get their dose of Conan O'Brien on his popular podcast that is definitely worth the listen.
