Earlier this week, grunge rock vocalist Courtney Love took to social media to acknowledge the undeniable similarities between the cover art for her band Hole’s second studio albumLive Through This, and singer Olivia Rodrigo’s promotional image for her upcoming concert film,Sour Prom. The event, which is based on her debut albumSour, will create an unforgettable prom experience for audiences.
The original 1994 album cover featured model Leilani Bishop holding a bouquet of flowers while wearing a prom dress with a tiara as black mascara runs down her face. Rodrigo can be shown paying homage to the iconic album cover and wearing a similar outfit.
"Since I never got to go to prom, I wanted to throw a little prom party with my fav ppl (you guys obvs), Rodrigo wrote on Facebook, announcing the prom event to her fans.
When Rodrigo shared the image to the social media platform, fans were quick to point out that she failed togive credit to Lovefor the inspiration.
In the comment section of the post, Love was upset at Rodrigo for replicating the album cover without permission and described the act as “rude.” She added that she’s not angry at Rodrigo recreating the image since it happens so frequently, but said “manners is manners” in regards to giving credit to the original.
Love added that she blames Rodrigo's label, Geffen Records, for the failure to acknowledge the original concept.
"It's on GEFFEN," she said. "I've informed [Rodrigo] I await her flowers snd note. I sure hope it's long. Does Disney teach kids reading and writing? God knows. Let's see. Yes, this is rude. Rage inducing? Honey if I had a dollar for everyone this happens? I'd be real rich!"
TheMusical: The Musical: The Seriesactress responded to Love’s post on Instagram, unaware of the rock legends’ anger toward the promotional image. "Love u and live through this sooooo much," she wrote.
Love reassured the singer that she has much love for her and suggested she send an apology note with flowers. "Olivia - you're welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! Dm me for deets! I look forward to reading your note,” she wrote, followed by a winking face emoji.
