However, prior to that emotional interview, Roberts had some wild situations with Letterman. One of them was a moment nobody was expecting, as Paul Shaffer intervened. Shaffer was honored that Letterman told him to step in at any point throughout his run on the show if he ever had anything to ask or add. This moment in particular, proved to be a memorable one.
Shaffer asks Roberts, "So Julia, um, are you getting laid these days," which is met by a gasp from Letterman and the audience. "Wasn't that what I was supposed to say," Shaffer adds. Letterman then gets up angrily and says, "What is wrong with you? What is the matter, are you just nuts?"
At that point, Roberts gets up and holds Letterman back from Shaffer. It was a brilliant moment as clearly the trio were just having some fun.

"I still can’t believe how good a job Julia did subbing for Dave when he was recovering from his bypass surgery. She was unbelievably brilliant as guest host."

"And I thought, 'I'm gonna go on and he's gonna know, within 10 seconds, what my I.Q. is, and [he] is going to, like a samurai, just Benihana me into pieces. And I'll be left for dead, and forgotten."
Letterman answers, "But why was it possible for you to have that perception? And I'm not arguing with you that that perception was false, but if I was doing that… why? What was the matter with me?"
Roberts simply replies, "Because, I think, stupid people annoy you."
The two finished off their final interview together with an emotional kiss, as Roberts would also thank Letterman for changing the late night scene.
