Have you ever been a dedicated viewer of a series, only to reach the final episode and wind up thoroughly disappointed? We could name a few shows that have done that to us, and one of them is getting a revival this year that has fans cautiously optimistic.

Dexter was a series that many fans were underwhelmed, to say the least, with during the last season -- especially in the finale. The main character, Dexter Morgan, faked his own death to start over in a new city and state. While that open-ended ending may not seem all that strange to casual viewers, fans were anticipating something more climactic regarding Dexter's big finale.

Most Dexter fans anticipated him being captured by police or killed in the finale, not running away from his life to start anew. However, that ending did leave the option for the series to return for a 9th season.

That big return is happening this fall on Showtime. The first look at Dexter: New Blood just days ago brought fans' sense of excitement about the series back. Here's some of what they're saying about the big return!

10 The Season Nine Trailer Debuted On July 25

Fans were anticipating the reveal of the trailer with Comic-Con@home's Dexter spotlight, and they were excited when they saw it happen. While the infamous character has found his footing in a new city and state, he's not yet rid himself of those urges. You know the ones... and fans are excited about seeing a certain dark passenger still existing, albeit quieted down.

9 This Fan Used A Pretty Great Meme To Share Their Excitement

If you've been around anyone who uses the terms in this meme, you'll understand it immediately. If you've not, we can try to sum it up in a few words. Fans are really excited about getting more Dexter. Okay, so maybe we can't really explain it, but excitement is definitely the feeling behind it.

This user was wondering if Dexter was trending because of somebody being killed in a Dexter-style manner. Luckily, it was just a trailer for a new season featuring 'everyone's favorite anti-hero'.

7 This Fan Might Not Have Wanted To Admit It, But They Felt Something Watching The Trailer

As many fans have said before, they're still a little upset by the series ending—some fans even felt that the series began to go downhill seasons before it's official wrap. It's hard to love a show and watch it slowly become something else entirely. It's hard to watch a show that's almost perfect until a bad episode or two before it ends forever.

This fan, for whatever reason, may not have wanted to be excited about the premiere of the trailer, but they were. They felt a little, something, and maybe that's all some fans need to tune back in and see what's happening next for Dexter, or rather, his new alias.

6 This Viewer Is All For Dexter Redeeming Itself

This fan is hoping that Dexter can redeem itself with season 9. What fans are looking for in the new episodes varies, but a lot of them want to know why he did what he did at the end of season eight and how that weighs on who he is now in his new life.

5 This Dexter Fan Is Pumped For The Return

As many Dexter fans were, this one was disappointed in the finale of the series. However, the trailer and what has been revealed about the series so far through interviews and the Comic-Con@Home segment, people are getting excited about the series.

The trailer just solidified to fans who weren't happy with the end of season eight that there's hope for a brighter, or in this case, darker future.

4 This User Was Thinking Of A Different Dexter

This fan was really excited to see Dexter trending, but they were thinking of the wrong character. Dexter's Laboratory was a Cartoon Network cartoon where the main character did share a name and an uncanny resemblance with Dexter Morgan.

3 This User Had A Thread Of Optimism

This Dexter fan posted a thread of reasons they were excited about the series return, the first being that the 'creative talent' that first brought Dexter to life was back. Also, they shared their excitement for the setting, being a small town in NY, and that New Blood will feature a new cast and have a 'darker' twist than the original.

2 This Viewer Is Ready To Celebrate Their Birthday Dexter Style

This fan is excited that Dexter: New Blood is returning near their birthday, and they aren't sure what could be better than celebrating with the series. They also used a GIF from the trailer that just ties the whole message together.

As fans know, Dexter isn't Dexter without a little bit (or a lot) of blood.

1 Michael C. Hall Has Questions, Too

Michael C. Hall has also wondered what the heck happened to Dexter. Season nine will answer questions that everyone has—including the cast. It's got to be hard to wrap up a show that was such a big part of your life, and while Hall understood the finale, he also understood why fans were upset about it.

The new season doesn't just give fans a new experience, it provides one for Hall as well.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Hall spoke about his thoughts on the Dexter finale.

"Let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, 'What the hell happened to that guy?' So I’m excited to step back into it."
