Not so long ago, famed comedian Jerry Seinfeld claimed that he was the reason behind the American Express Centurion card, previously known as the black card. So, is the rumor true, or is Jerry just pushing a joke like he’s used to?

As fans might know, the card has no credit limit and is designed for the rich in society. Jerry let the cat out of the box when speaking to fellow comedian John Mulaney during an episode of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee.

Given his insane net worth and love for the New York Mets, Jerry Seinfeld has been closely aligned to the team for years.

In the clip, Jerry tells Mulaney that one crew member at a shoot asked him whether he owned the rumored credit card that had no limit. The card was said to be owned by only three people, including the Sultan of Brunei, the president of American Express, and Jerry himself.

Of course, this wasn’t true; it was just a rumor. The next day, he approached the president of American Express and gave up the idea of the Black Card. Seinfeld got the first Black Card in 1999, after its launch: so he claims.

According to The Point Guys, American Express couldn’t confirm nor deny Jerry’s claims. We might never know the truth, but it’s rumored other celebrities may be black cardholders.

In the clip where Jerry Seinfeld talks about the origin of the black card, fans found it hard to believe the story. One fan said that the crew member who brought in the rumor and started a series of events that led to Jerry approaching the president of American Express was the real hero and should get a black card.

Another quoted that the camera guy deserved recognition and an award for the entire idea.

Some fans in the comment section couldn’t stop but marvel at how Jerry is a timeless comedian who doesn’t have to do too much to get a laugh out of viewers. One fan added how Seinfeld oozes success so effortlessly. Another joked that Seinfeld’s ego got him to the class of elites, deservingly so.

Others commented how much they’ve missed the funny guy on TV. Going through the comments, we can’t help but notice how Jerry promotes comedy unknowingly. It takes great talent to make that happen.

So, do his fans believe that Jerry was behind the black card launch? It seems that they are divided on the subject, though if true, it's a fun story to tell.
