Although Julia Fox's brief fling with Kanye West at the start of 2022 helped boost her public prominence, Fox claimed that the attention was not without a price.
Fox was the undisputed breakthrough star of 2019's Uncut Gems, but her acting career seems to have come to an abrupt halt, perhaps as a result of the negative connotations associated with a particular ex who had a public mental collapse.
Was her career as an actress irreparably damaged by her short-lived romance with Kanye West?
Was Kanye West Still In Love With Kim Kardashian When He Was With Julia Fox?
After Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kanye West in February 2021, Fox and West began dating. However, after around six weeks, Fox decided to end things after the singer posted many (now deleted) Instagram postings pleading with his reality star ex to take him back.
The star told ES magazine in September that year that she was "proud" of herself for ending the relationship at the "first sign of a red flag" rather than letting things get worse.
She informed the magazine that West has "unresolved issues that he was dealing with," adding, "It just seems like he had a lot to work on, and I just don't have time for it or energy."
Fox said, "Pre-Valentino Julia would have definitely stuck it out and been there for longer," in reference to Julia's one-year-old kid with ex-husband Peter Artemiev. Nonetheless, she presently does not "have the bandwidth or emotional capacity for it."
Fox was clearly displaying her devotion to West, even going so far as to suggest they were a serious couple, so West's online tirades must have wounded her profoundly.
Fox defended West's "residual feelings" for Kardashian, saying that it was "human" for someone to still care for a former partner. “I also know that he’s with me now. And that's all that matters,” she exclaimed in the Call Her Daddy podcast while they were still together.
West posted to Instagram mere hours after Fox's appearance on the podcast, expressing his desire to be with Kim and their four children (North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm).
Ouch.
Did Kanye West Ruin Julia Fox's Acting Career?
The Uncut Gems muse spoke about her failed relationship with the rapper and the subsequent missed opportunities on an episode of Emily Ratajkowski's High Low with EmRata podcast.
“After the big relationship, I definitely noticed a shift in the acting way, not in a good way,” she said. “I’m not getting as many offers as I was before, weirdly. There’s been a lot of weird drawbacks with reaching that level of notoriety.”
The actor said she believes her colleagues in the entertainment world now view her as a "liability" or "tabloid type of person." Fox, however, is not going to let a minor setback in her career prevent her from achieving all of her goals, adding, “I’m so busy. I think things come to you at the right time, so that’s why I’m really not stressing. I really don’t care.”
Fox's career decline could be tied, at least in part, to West's divisive remarks regarding anti-semitism.
After anti-Semitic and white supremacist comments, West was effectively canceled. Adidas, Balenciaga, Vogue, and CAA all cut ties with the Yeezy founder; meanwhile, despite having finished production on the documentary "Ye," financiers at MRC decided to bury the project.
West made an offer to purchase the conservative social media site, Parler, stating, “In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial, we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves.”
The family of George Floyd was also alleged to be considering legal action against West for his comments on the show "Drink Champs" that Floyd died of a fentanyl overdose rather than at the hands of cops. Floyd's daughter is seeking $250 million in damages.
During an interview with Piers Morgan, West attempted to offer an apology for his recent remarks.
“I just want to say that it’s wrong to hold an apology hostage, and I gotta let go of that, and free myself of the trauma and say, ‘Look, I’m just gonna give it all up to God right now,’” West said.
Fox's time with West was brief, but it did happen to coincide with the beginning of West's strange internet conduct. And an apology may not be enough to disassociate Fox from West or free him from his discriminatory remarks.
Fox, thankfully, is maintaining an optimistic view, saying in the podcast, “I think things come to you at the right time, so that’s why I’m really not stressing. I really don’t care.”
What Has Julia Fox Been Up To Since Breaking Up With Kanye West?
According to Elle, Fox is working on a memoir that would explore her personal development, though she is cautious about revealing too much about it. Fox shared that she had a strong desire to become a writer even as a child, to the point that she would steal books from Barnes & Noble.
She's almost 200 pages in and said the book follows a chronological narrative of her life but isn't focused on her romantic partnerships. Having said that, she did make an incredible declaration.
Julia Fox has had enough of toxic men. She's had it.
She expressed her sentiments about dating in 2023 in an interview with Elle, saying, "Like, don't talk to me, don't look at me, don't bother me."
And she's not just talking about men she's dated—though you may make your own judgments about one of her recent ex-boyfriends.
If you missed the constant paparazzi images or viral red-carpet events, Fox, the breakout star of the 2019 film Uncut Gems, began 2022 as West's girlfriend and ended it somewhere between West's total meltdown and her own rapid climb to celebrity.
Regarding West’s anti-Semitism, she said, “I just feel so bad for everyone involved, to be honest. I feel bad for his family, his children. I feel bad for the Jewish people. Some of my Jewish friends are shook right now, and that f***ing breaks my heart. I really, truly, would’ve never seen him taking this direction.”
Was dating West so traumatic that this woman is now publishing a memoir about her life and grievances?
