Elliot Page has been in the entertainment industry for decades, but has been relatively private about his personal life, until now. The actor announce he was gay in 2014 and later came out as transgender in 2020, before divorcing his wife of three years, Emma Portner, in 2021.
Elliot’s latest public relationship may have been the end of his marriage, but the actor is only now opening up about other romances he’s experience out of the spotlight, thanks to the debut of his memoir Pageboy, which hit shelves on June 6. The book goes into detail about Elliot’s life, from discovering he was transgender to some of his most impactful relationships.
One of the biggest revelations Elliot made in the memoir was that had a secret affair with Kate Mara when she was in a relationship with another actor, Max Minghella. This has led to speculation over whether Max knew about their romance, and if so, how he felt, and how things between Elliot and Kate eventually ended. Here’s what we know.
Elliot Implied Max And Kate Had Had An Open Relationship
Elliot didn’t shy away from naming both Kate and Max in his memoir, though it would’ve been easy enough to use code names for the actors. This implies Elliot wasn’t expecting backlash From Kate or Max upon the book’s release, or at the very least, didn’t care.
“The first person I fell for after my heart was broken was Kate Mara. She had a boyfriend at the time, the lovely and talented Max Minghella,” Elliot explained. The Trailer Park Boys star added that Max was “supportive” of Kate exploring a relationship outside of their own.
Elliot declined to go into detail about Max and Kate’s relationship, including what their situation was. It appears the pair may have had an open relationship, considering Elliot says Max was okay with Kate having other romances.
For now, neither Kate nor Max have commented on Elliot’s revelation. This suggests they may not care that he broke the news, or they may have even been expecting it.
Max and Kate dated from 2010 to 2014, so it’s been nearly a decade since they split. Both actors have had relationships with other people. Kate is currently married to actor Jamie Bell, with whom she shares two children.
Considering it’s been so long since Max and Kate’s relationship, it could all be water under the bridge, including her romance with Elliot. Assuming their relationship was open, they may not care if the world knows Kate was seeing someone else while she was with Max, and their lack of statements seem to imply this is the case.
Kate Eventually Chose Max Over Elliot
Later in Pageboy, Elliot implied that Kate chose her relationship with Max over their romance, though it didn’t make it any less special. "I never thought I could be in love with two people and now I know I can,” Elliot recalls Kate telling him.
Elliot and Kate’s affair happened around 2014 while they filmed X-Men: Days of Future Past together. Elliot had just publicly come out as gay, and says that the fact neither he nor Kate were fully available made things work, implying he may have always known it was a temporary fling.
“This was right after I’d come out as gay and it was a time of exploration and also heartbreak,” he wrote. “I think my relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Kate, very much encapsulates a certain dynamic that I consistently found myself in, which was falling for people that — I think a lot of us do this — who aren't fully available.”
He added, “And the sort of safety in that and the highs and the lows and the serotonin bump, and then it goes away."
"I think the love and care that we have for each other is its very own special thing," Elliot continued. "Separate from the intimacy that I write about.”
Elliot and Kate remain on good terms to this day. The actress is reportedly set to attend a book signing in honor of Elliot’s new memoir, which is a clear sign she’s supportive of the book, despite some of its salacious revelations.
Elliot Page Exposed Another Secret Romance With A Juno Co-Star
Elliot’s romance was Kate wasn’t the only secret relationship he exposed in Pageboy. The actor also revealed his on-set romance with Juno co-star Olivia Thirby. Elliot would’ve only been 20-years old at the time.
"[She was the] first woman I had a suitably consensual sexual relationship with,” Elliot recalled. "We were the same age, but she seemed so much older, capable and centered. Sexually open, far removed from where I was at the time."
"We started having sex all the time: her hotel room, in our trailers at work, once in a tiny, private room in a restaurant. What were we thinking? We thought we were subtle," the Umbrella Academy star went on. "Being intimate with Olivia helped my shame dissipate. I didn't see a glint of it in her eyes and I wanted that — done feeling wretched about who I am."
For now, Olivia hasn’t publicly addressed Elliot’s comments. Likewise, Elliot isn’t romantically linked to anyone publicly at the moment.
