Amanda Bynes has had her fair share of problems in her life since her days on Nickelodeon. Most of these troubles revolve around mental health issues, drug abuse, and run-ins with the law. As a result of her erratic behavior, the She's the Man star was eventually placed on a psychiatric hold, and shortly thereafter, her mother filed for a conservatorship to protect Bynes and her assets. In 2013 that conservatorship was granted.
Over the years, Bynes worked hard to improve her mental and physical health. This meant going on medications to stabilize her behavior, attending AA, and checking into treatment facilities to abstain from drugs and alcohol. It was during this time that Bynes met Paul Michael (though her mom reportedly prevented her from getting married until her conservatorship ended).
With the help of her attorney, Bynes filed a petition to end the conservatorship in 2022. It was ultimately granted by a judge and for the first time in nearly a decade, Bynes was free to make her own decisions. One of these decisions appeared to be walking down the aisle with Michael. Amanda Revealed She Was Engaged (But Didn't Reveal Whom To)
The day that fans learned Bynes was in a relationship with Michael was the same day that the What I Like About You star announced she was engaged. But it was not without some pushing from fans that Bynes finally revealed the identity of the man she had intended to spend her life with.
On Valentine's Day 2020, Bynes posted a picture to Instagram that showed her hand with an engagement ring and her fiancé's hand that was wearing a gold band.
"Engaged to tha love of my life," Bynes captioned the photo.
Wanting desperately to know who the man was that won Bynes' heart, fans begged the Living Proof star to introduce her fiancé to the world. And just two days after the engagement, Bynes did just that when she posted a selfie of herself and Michael looking very happy and in love.
Did Paul Michael And Amanda Bynes Get Married?
While Michael and Bynes had a contentious relationship that caused them to break up and get back together several times, it was an argument where Bynes accused Michael of falling off the wagon which seemed to cause a rift in the relationship. And this rift was something that proved to be difficult to overcome.
Two years after Bynes and Michael were engaged, Bynes called the police on Michael after an argument. Instead of keeping the details of what happened between the two under wraps, the Lovewrecked star's attorney issued a statement regarding what happened.
"Amanda and Paul had an argument Wednesday evening," Bynes' attorney stated. "Amanda left her home, where Paul has been residing, for her safety before the situation escalated. She was not there when police arrived."
This came after Bynes took to Instagram to allege that Michael had relapsed and she was "afraid."
However, it turns out that Michael had not relapsed. And in order to try to save the relationship, Bynes issued a statement walking back her accusations.
"I thought Paul relapsed, but I was wrong," Bynes explained. "He drug tested for me from a drug test kit I bought from CVS. The drug test was negative for all substances. Paul and I are staying together. I am so sorry for the confusion I caused."
Though the couple did reconcile, Bynes and Michael eventually broke things off for good. And because of this, the relationship, let alone a wedding, was a thing of the past.
Why Did Amanda Bynes And Paul Michael Break Up?
The relationship between Bynes and Michael was consistently filled with turmoil. And because of this, the two broke up and got back together several times over the course of the nearly three years they were together, with the last time coming shortly before Bynes was recently placed on a 5150 hold.
Three weeks after the 2020 engagement was announced, Bynes and Michael went their separate ways. But, not being able to stay away from each other, the two again became engaged in the months after their first break up.
The second engagement lasted until July 2022. After claiming Michael had fallen off the wagon, the couple had a hard time getting back to a place where they were confident in their choice to want to get married. And because of this, the two broke up again.
Much to the surprise of fans, Bynes and Michael were on again in October 2022. While the talk of marriage was off the table, the two claimed to be in a committed relationship. Things still appeared to be status quo in December.
It was not until March 2023 that Michael made it clear that he and Bynes were no longer together. The two were simply just "friends now." However, given that he had details of what caused the "public meltdown," Bynes and Michael are clearly still very involved in each other's lives.
What Paul Michael Is Doing Today
These days, it is unclear what Michael is doing now that he is out of the spotlight. However, it appears that he is staying clean and sober given that he has been able to find a place of his own to live without financial help from Bynes.
"She tried to kick me out, but I left to get my own place,” Michael explained. "I moved home and established boundaries."
