While Jerry Seinfeld has a private family life and fans are curious to learn more about his daughter Sascha, fans are super familiar with Seinfeld. The show has become part of society in a way that Jerry and his co-creator Larry David could never have imagined. Decades later, fans are still quoting it on the daily and consuming it thanks to re-runs, Youtube, and Netflix.
Seinfeld is universally thought of as one of the most hilarious sitcoms. But there is one part of the show that most people don't seem to like, and that's George Constaza's fiance, Susan Ross. The characters have several romances over the show and some might say that Susan and George don't share much chemistry, yet they do stay together for a while and even get engaged. This is something that the cast realized and even try to fix by getting actor Heidi Swedberg fired from the show. But do Seinfeld fans really hate Susan? Let's take a look.
Fan Reaction To Susan
Fans didn't like some Seinfeld episodes, and people often hear that when it comes to the most disliked character on the sitcom, it has to be Susan Ross. She's introduced in the season 4 episode "The Pitch" when George and Jerry have their pitch meeting for their own show. George and Susan's relationship is definitely not as interesting as others on the show and it's fair to say that she's a hated character.
One Reddit user shared that they thought that "Susan and George = lazy writing" and they explained that they didn't think her death made sense: "For their wedding invitations, she licks dozens of envelopes. Not a wet sponge. Not someone your wealthy father hires to send out invitations. Licking envelopes. Any other examples of lazy writing in the George and Susan department?"
Jason Alexander explained that Susan's Seinfeld death was due to how tough it was to work with Heidi Swedberg. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said on The Howard Stern Show, “They go, ‘You know what? It’s f—ing impossible. It’s impossible.' And Julia actually said, ‘Don’t you want to just kill her?’ And Larry went, ‘Ka-bang!'”
Jason also said, “I couldn’t figure out how to play off of her. Her instincts for doing a scene, where the comedy was, and mine were always misfiring."
A fan posted on Reddit that it seemed logical for Susan to die because "That awkwardness, that sense that they didn't gel, was perfect."
Most Seinfeld fans who have shared how they feel about Susan on Reddit seem to agree that there's just something unlikable about her. One Reddit user wrote, "I've always hated the character. Why? I can't put my finger on it. She's not a bad person, she's obviously waaaaayyy more than George ever deserved. But something about her is just so annoying, or... something."
A few fans discussed that Susan felt like a snob and like she thought she was above everyone around her. That was definitely her personality and it wasn't a lot of fun to watch. Another fan called her "bland" and that's another good point, as compared to a character like Elaine Benes who is so funny and unique, there just wasn't much about Susan to love. It's also fair to say that George and Susan didn't seem to have a very loving relationship and it was really hard to buy them as a couple who could get married and live happily ever after.
Susan's Death
Susan died in the season 7 episode "The Invitations" by, of course, licking her wedding invitations.
George and Jerry both acted a bit casually about Susan passing away. The doctor told George that Susan must have died by licking envelopes that didn't cost much and had toxic adhesives. While George seemed understandably surprised to hear this, he didn't seem to have a very big reaction that would suggest that he was completely heartbroken. He was pretty numb about it. When he let Jerry know about this sad news, Jerry told him, "So I guess... you're not getting married."
Jason Alexander took to Twitter as it seemed that he felt bad about what he said on The Howard Stern Show about Susan and Heidi Swedberg. In a post called "Oh dear God, leave Heidi alone," Jason tweeted a very sweet and classy message to his former co-star. Jason tweeted, “[Swedberg] was generous and gracious, and I am so mad at myself for retelling this story in any way that would diminish her. If I had had more maturity or more security in my own work, I surely would have taken her query and possibly tried to adjust the scenes with her. She surely offered. But, I didn't have that maturity or security."
Jason called Heidi "a kind and lovely person" and said that the cast did like her, unlike what people have said, and he told Heidi that he was sorry because she's a "sweetheart." He also said that he can tell now that George and Susan had a "fun relationship."
