Although Meghan Markle’s current marriage to Prince Harry is her most high-profile one, it wasn’t her first time walking down the aisle. The Suits actress was previously married to talent agent and producer Trevor Engelson, with whom she had a relationship with for nearly two decades.It’s been a decade since they divorced in 2013, but still, not a lot is known about Meghan’s first marriage, including whether she and her ex-husband are still on good terms. Meghan Markle Hasn't Spoken To Her Ex In Years
Meghan hasn’t publicly talked about her ex-husband for years, so it’s unclear when was the last time they had communication. But it likely wasn’t recently, given reports that she’s angry Trevor is going public with the details of their marriage.
In May 2022, a report by The Mirror says Meghan is “terrified” at the thought of Trevor talking to the media about their relationship.
At the time, it was reported Trevor was speaking to British biographer Tom Bower about his marriage to Meghan, as Bower was collecting information to release a book about Meghan’s life before marrying Harry.
The biographer claims Trevor claimed that Meghan made him feel like “a piece of something stuck to the bottom of Meghan’s shoe” towards the end of their relationship, implying it didn’t end well.
Moreover, Trevor allegedly said Meghan rubbed him the wrong way when she allegedly sent her wedding and engagement rings back to Trevor in the mail. Bower says that Trevor could “barely contain his anger” at his ex-wife’s gesture.
"Similarly, she cut off her ex-husband when her career started taking off,” Bower said of his impression of Meghan. "She seems to me to be a very ambitious, unforgiving person."
In a YouTube video, the biographer says he expect Meghan to be scared by his book. "This must be terrifying for Meghan Markle, herself because obviously, they've got an axe to grind, some may say, but on the other side of the coin, they definitely want to get their side of the story out," he stated.
Meghan’s former friend, Ninaki Priddy, who was also the Maid of Honour at her first wedding, seemed to confirm Meghan and Trevor ended on bad terms when speaking to The Express. "The way she handled it, Trevor definitely had the rug pulled out from under him. He was hurt,” she said of the divorce.
Priddy claims that she didn’t want to “associate herself” with the actress after she learned the details of Meghan and Trevor’s split.
If the various reports are true, then it’s safe to assume that Meghan and Trevor have little to no communication given that things still seem acrimonious between the exes.
Trevor Tried Producing A Show About Meghan’s Marriage To Prince Harry
Trevor has appeared to try to capitalize on Meghan’s fame following her marriage to Prince Harry before. In 2017, it was reported that the television producer was trying to create a show inspired by Meghan’s personal life.
Described as a “divorce comedy,” the show would’ve followed a man’s journey after being left for a British prince.
While Engelson denied claims the characters were based on his real-life ex-wife and her now-husband, it was hard to see past the similarities. But there were a few key details of the plot that were fictionalized, like the divorce couple sharing kids and having to co-parent internationally.
"Divorce is hard. Sharing custody is harder. Sharing custody with the British Royal family when your wife marries a prince, in the unforgiving spotlight of London’s tabloid media, is next level,” the show’s pitch explained.
Ultimately, however, the television show was never greenlighted. But it’s hard to deny that Trevor was trying to use his own experience to inspire the show… and perhaps even capitalize on his ex-wife’s new fame.
Though Meghan never commented on the potential show, it’s likely that she wasn’t fond of the idea, since it put attention on her past marriage at a time when she was gearing up to marry into the royal family, once again fuelling speculation that she likely has little communication with her ex nowadays.
Why Meghan Markle Got A Divorce From Trevor Engelson
Meghan and Trevor were only married for two years before she filed for divorce in 2013, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Their divorce was granted the following year.
Reports at the time said the long-time couple had been growing more distant in the months before their wedding, right around the time Meghan accepted the role in Suits that would launch her into newfound fame.
Meghan was connected to Prince Harry within a few years of her divorce, and the pair tied the knot in 2018. They’ve since abdicated their royal duties and relocated to California, where they’re raising their two kids. Meghan’s ex-husband Trevor also still lives in California.
For now, Meghan and Trevor have never publicly given a reason for their break-up, but when it comes to royal drama, anything can happen in the future.
