Watch Ariana Grande Tear Up Over Drew Barrymore's 'Wicked' Surprise

Wicked star Ariana Grande made an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday (December 5), and the singer was moved to tears when she was presented with an unexpected showbiz artifact.

It's common knowledge that host Drew Barrymore is the definition of Hollywood royalty, and that her childhood as a very young star in the spotlight was far from easy:

"Not only is she the goddaughter of Sophia Loren and godmother to Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s child, but she was also born into two acting dynasties that date back two centuries: the Barrymores and the Drews.

"Her grandfather, John Barrymore, and his siblings Lionel and Ethel, were leading lights of the stage and screen."

Drew's pedigree goes way back, and though she has a string of film hits to her name, she's happy and emotionally invested in hosting her daily syndicated talk show — which is described on its website as "daytime's brightest destination for intelligent optimism and maximum fun."

Thursday's episode and its surprise for Ariana certainly lived up to that phrasing.

It stands to reason that Drew's standing in Tinseltown means she has some impressive connections — which could be how she managed to get her hands on a truly iconic prop to surprise Ariana.

On Thursday's episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Ariana joined her to discuss Wicked — and a number of other topics.

At 31, Ariana is a bit younger than Drew, who is 49, but Ariana touched upon Drew's well-known history in an industry that has long chewed up and spit out child stars.

Like Drew, Ariana became involved in show business at a young age — and though some risks to child actors have ostensibly been mitigated since the 1980s, Ariana was still exposed to some of the known dangers of Hollywood.

She acknowledged Drew's tumultuous early years and the manner in which she's risen above it to make a positive impact in entertainment:

"I don't know too much about what your relationship has been to this industry this whole time, but I do know what you have shared publicly about it, and I just have to say, it can be ugly sometimes ...

"Your strength and your heart and who you are and the light that you bring and your ability to dance in the rain and preserve that childlike wonder is such a gift."

As for Drew, she planned an incredibly thoughtful surprise for the Wicked star in advance of filming.

On Tuesday, @thedrewbarrymoreshow shared a teaser Reel of Ariana's appearance on Instagram:

Drew told Ariana she'd gotten her hands on something "extremely exciting and special."

The duo sat together closely, like old friends, and as Drew began to explain, Ariana immediately got emotional, cutting in with: "What are you talking about?"

As she readied to unveil the surprise, Drew began:

"Um, it's actually, it was owned by the Smithsonian, and now it's owned in private hands.

"Um, but for the purposes of our sit down, they loaned it to us."

Ariana gasped before Drew even got to the next part.

The host continued:

Um, bring out the original Glinda wand, please.

In this case, "the original Glinda wand" was indeed the actual prop from the original 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz, the source material on which Wicked is based.

Ariana covered her mouth with her hand and was clearly fighting back happy tears, even before Drew observed: "You look perfect with it."

After studying the "original Glinda wand" for several moments, Ariana jokingly stood, said "thank you guys, it's been fun," and feigned walking off the set before sitting back down and asking Drew how she finagled it.

So, how did Drew obtain the "original Glinda wand," which she said had fallen into private hands from the Smithsonian's collection?

Drew didn't really answer Ariana's question directly, instead saying she wanted to do something meaningful — Drew mentioned "the producers [of The Drew Barrymore Show]," but didn't elaborate on the strings she presumably pulled to arrange the surprise.
