The Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard trial is generating enormous amounts of analysis in the media. Everybody has an opinion, and is willing to share it. Pro-Johnny or pro-Amber, the facts emerging from their trial are being dissected and questioned in great depth. But while casual internet users are giving their two cents on the case, big celebrities have also been weighing in on the legal battle, with actress and TV personality Drew Barrymore speaking up last week on her daytime talk show. Speaking with guest Anthony Anderson last week, Barrymore, 47, appeared to mock Johnny Depp's situation, causing consternation from viewers and the online community.
Despite quickly apologizing for "making light" of Johnny's situation, there has nonetheless been massive backlash against her offhand comments.
7 What Did Drew Barrymore Say?
Speaking casually on her show, Barrymore called the court battle a "seven-layer dip of insanity." Together with her guest, Drew laughed and cracked several jokes about the more unusual details to emerge from the ongoing trial.
"It's so fascinating. I know that these are two people's real lives and I know what it's like to have your life put out in public. I understand all the feelings, but they are actually offering up this information," she said during the show.
6 She Then Immediately Apologized
After it was clear that her jokes hadn't gone down well, Drew was forced to make a tearful apology via her Instagram.
"It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard," she said, "and for that I just want to deeply apologize and appreciate everyone who spoke out because this can be a teachable moment for me and how I move forward and how I conduct myself."
5 And Promised To Think More Carefully In Future
Drew also said that she would think again before being so flippant about real-life people in difficult situations:
"I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person," continued Barrymore. "I very much appreciate the depth of this and I will grow and change from it. And I thank everyone for helping me grow along the way and teaching me. Thank you."
4 Some Were Calling For Her Show To Be Axed
Despite her apology, it was too late for some online users. Enraged, they called for her popular talk show to be ended.
'I need Drew Barrymore to join Ellen Degeneres and James Corden and have her talk show canceled. She does not deserve a platform if she is going to make fun of domestic abuse and male victims.' said one Twitter user.
For others, her apology simply wasn't enough.
'Nope. Apology not accepted. Drew Barrymore is nearly 50 years old. If she still has to learn that someone being abused is not something to laugh about - then I think she’s beyond “learning.” You’re either a good person or you’re not. She clearly isn’t.'
3 They Also Said She Had Harmed Victims Of Domestic Violence
With the believability of male domestic abuse victims becoming a big theme of this trial, many thought it was especially poor for Drew to joke about relationship violence, and claimed she had hurt their plight.
'Didn’t think I’d ever say this but FUCK DREW BARRYMORE. Domestic abuse is not a joke, regardless of the victim’s gender. Shame on you for making light of the fact that Johnny was self harming and almost died of MRSA because Amber cut his fingertip off with a vodka bottle,' one person said angrily online.
'Drew Barrymore making jokes about Johnny Depp, then people wonder why men don't speak out about abuse, people make it a joke......at least Barrymore is getting backlash.' said another.
2 Others Called Her A Hypocrite
It did not escape the attention of Johnny fans that Barrymore was something of a hypocrite, having battled with substance abuse issues and personal problems throughout her own life. Attacking Johnny for similar struggles, they said, verged on the ridiculous.
'Drew Barrymore hasn't been relevant since Scream & from then on her life has been a tragic theater of failed relationships & drug problems so for her to sit on her clown show & laugh at Johnny Depp's pain & invalidate male abuse victims is a truly grotesque sociopathic display' said one Twitter user.
'If anyone knows Drew Barrymore's past they'd think it would have affected her enough to be more compassionate towards victims of abuse. A very disappointing day. How has this world become so distasteful and cruel? The man took courage to to speak out and you laugh?'
1 Some Questioned How Her Statements Made The Cut
One Twitter user intelligently questioned how Drew's comments ever made it on air. Having the power to make editorial decisions on her own show, some wondered how she ever thought her comments were acceptable to be shown on TV.
'Drew Barrymore executive produces her own TV show so she has direct input as to what they use for advertisement for the show and that’s the clip they used as an advertisement for the next upcoming show making fun of Johnny Depp‘s chopped off finger and laughing hysterically…' the writer said.
