When Drew Barrymore was a young child, she starred in one of the most successful movies of all time, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Absolutely adorable in the movie, millions of viewers grew to adore Barrymore which resulted in her quickly becoming extremely famous. As a result, Barrymore became one of the most famous child stars of all time.
Unlike a lot of other people who became famous actors when they were young, Drew Barrymore beat the odds by becoming one of the former child stars who succeeded in Hollywood as an adult. On top of that, her unique life has allowed Barrymore to talk about parenting in a meaningful way. However, anyone who thinks that everything has been easy for Barrymore is mistaken. For proof of that fact, all you have to do is keep in mind that Barrymore’s mom once had her locked up.
Drew Barrymore’s Mom Had Her Locked Up
After Drew Barrymore starred in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, it seemed like every door was open to her. After all, Barrymore was routinely seen on the red carpet rubbing elbows with the biggest stars in the world when she was still a youngster. On top of that, Barrymore developed a close bond with one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood history, Steven Spielberg.
Even though there are millions of people who would give up a lot just to walk the red carpet at a major event once, having that kind of access wound up being a problem for Drew Barrymore. After all, Barrymore has since revealed that even when she was a child, her fame allowed her to access illegal substances and alcohol. If that wasn’t bad enough, her family has a long history of addiction issues. With all of that in mind, is it any wonder that Barrymore has a troubled past?
In 2015, Drew Barrymore was interviewed by The Guardian and she revealed some stunning details about her past. For example, it turns out that many years ago, Barrymore’s mom had her locked up in an institution, and based on how she described that experience, it sounds terrible. “It was like serious recruitment training and boot camp, and it was horrible and dark and very long-lived, a year and a half.”
Later in the same interview, Barrymore explained that the institution was “for the mentally ill” and she wasn’t allowed to leave. Barrymore also revealed that her mom didn’t give her any warning about being sent to the institution and that while she was there, doctors tried to make her take medication but she was able to refuse. Years later, during an episode of her talk show, Barrymore took cameras on a tour of the area where the institution she was locked up in exists.
Even though Drew Barrymore clearly didn’t enjoy the year and a half she spent in that institution, she actually went on to say that her time there was necessary. “I needed it. I needed that whole insane discipline. My life was not normal. I was not a kid in school with normal circumstances. There was something very abnormal, and I needed some severe shift.” Still, when she left the institution, Barrymore got emancipated from her parents at only 14 years old.
Why Drew Barrymore’s Life Has Completely Turned Around
Considering that Drew Barrymore went through the kind of struggles that most people can only imagine, it is truly amazing to see where her life has gone since then. For example, Barrymore has become a highly successful daytime talk show host with millions of fans who tune in to watch anytime they can. There is one reason why people enjoy Barrymore’s talk show so much, she seems so warm and at peace with herself that she makes viewers feel good.
On top of seemingly finding the job she was meant for, Drew Barrymore appears to have attained happiness in her personal life. After all, Barrymore has revealed that she has figured out what her priorities are at the moment which is why she has given up on dating for the time being. That said, Barrymore has assured fans that she isn’t “closed for business” in the love department. Instead, she is just choosing to focus on other things for now.
Even though Drew Barrymore definitely appears to take a lot of joy in hosting her talk show, there is something else she obviously cares about a lot more, being a mom. While she has unfortunately been open that co-parenting with her ex is a struggle, Barrymore often speaks about how much she enjoys being a mother. Given everything Barrymore has been through, it is marvelous to see how happy she appears to be in her professional and personal life.
