Ed Sheeran has had quite a journey these past few years. The "Perfect" singer experienced all the emotions that come with supporting a spouse who was battling cancer along with feeling the emotions that come with being a soon-to-be father.
Although Ed Sheeran has maintained a fairly private life while being a household name in the music industry, he's allowed himself to publicly express his love of fatherhood. There's no doubt that Sheeran enjoys what he does for a living. However, his new role as a doting father almost made him give up his career.
Ed Sheeran's Parenting Style Almost Cost Him His Profitable Music Career
In various interviews, Ed Sheeran shared snippets of his parenting style that nearly convinced him to abandon his career.
Contained within these interviews is a father wanting to be fully present for his children. This is an admirable trait considering the busy schedule and life the British singer leads. According to the National Library of Medicine, there are four classified parenting styles: Authoritative parenting, Permissive parenting, authoritarian parenting, and uninvolved parenting.
Parenting Style | |
---|---|
Authoritarian | Tend to have a one-way mode of communication where the parent establishes strict rules that the child obeys. |
Authoritative | Normally develops a close, nurturing relationship with their children. They have clear guidelines for their expectations and explain their reasons associated with disciplinary actions. |
Permissive | Tend to be ward, nurturing and usually minimal or no expectations. |
Uninvolved | Children are given a lot of freedom as this type of parent normally stays out of the way. They fulfill the child's basic needs while generally remaining detached from their child's life. |
It's unclear what happens behind closed doors between Ed Sheeran and his two daughters when it comes to day-to-day procedures of Sheeran's parenting, but one thing is obvious: Ed Sheeran wanted to be the opposite of an uninvolved parent.
In a 2021 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Sheeran disclosed how much he'd been affected since becoming a dad. So much so that it caused ripple effects in the way he operates as a person.
"I just found that I really didn't have a purpose outside of [music] because when I was giving myself fixed time of no work, I wasn't doing anything I enjoyed because I love doing music. And [being a dad] has actually given me purpose and something in life that's actually more important than my job."
He then went on to express how difficult it was to be away from his only daughter at the time, Lyra:
"I actually find this really, really difficult, being away. And I'm only away for like four days... There was a conversation about maybe taking Cherry and Lyra over here and jet lag's just not fun for babies."
We can assume this feeling of wanting to be constantly around his daughter Lyra was mutual when he and his wife welcomed Jupiter in 2022.
Ed Sheeran's effort to want to be an involved dad led him to contemplate being a full-time stay-at-home dad, which meant the world would no longer experience live performances or new music.
"I had finished the ÷ tour and ÷ sold definitely like over 22 million copies, which is like more copies than I've ever sold with an album. The tour was heavily publicized, it was the biggest tour of all time and sold in like 19 seconds. And I remember standing on the Ipswich stage finishing and then getting off-stage and just being like, I'm 28. And like, I don't know what to do now — I've chased and chased and chased and chased and got to this thing," Sheeran said on SiriusXM.

At the time of Sheeran's most profitable tour, Lyra was 11 months old, and she had a major influence on his life-changing consideration of leaving behind his music career.
"And then in my year off, I was kind of searching for who I was because I stopped playing music for a bit. And music is entirely me as a person. And then I had my daughter — well, my wife had our daughter, but I'm a parent," Sheeran said.
"And then I was like, 'That's it, this is me, I'm just going to be a dad, I'm not going to play music anymore."
Thankfully, Ed Sheeran ultimately decided against being a stay-at-home father.

She's always been a private person," Sheeran said on The Elvis Duran Morning Show. "She's never had a public Instagram. She's never done a red carpet with me. We've always been super private.
