Fashion-minded fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can’t stop obsessing over Elizabeth Olsen - but that probably can’t be helped after seeing the different 20th century getups she gets to wear in WandaVision.
The first installment of MCU’s Phase 4 projects is available on Disney+, where fans can see their favorite redhead reprising famous American sitcom roles from every decade of television - wardrobe and all. Evergreen hairdos, top-hats, colorful 70s leotards; it's a costume designer's dream project.
What Marvel fans are really excited for, though is Olsen’s comic-accurate get-up for the Scarlet Witch. A Halloween episode teased in the trailer for the series shows Wanda dressed up in the classic cape-and-corset of the classic comic Scarlet Witch, with her iconic headgear.
According to Olsen, she had to fight to keep all the elements of the original costume. In an interview with Vanity Fair’s Still Watching Podcast, she says:
"I was so excited! Actually, we have a Halloween episode, and they were trying to figure out how big of a nod to the character we were going to do, and it did start off with the classic Scarlet Witch costume. I...fought for it. I was like 'No, we have to, like, we have to go full into it."
Olsen assured fans that, even though she once argued against the use of the classic Scarlet Witch getup, she has changed her tune, as she sports the costume for substantial time in the episode.
"It's not just a flash...I'm really in the costume for quite a bit. And it was so fun! I loved it, and it was the perfect way to wear that costume, because you can't take that costume seriously."
Like most of her Avengers teammates, Scarlet Witch had a complete revamp of her costume to make it more practical and battle-ready for the movies. Both he producers and the star herself were doubtful about the utility of the original costume.
In a previous interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2016, Elizabeth recounts the conversation she had about her role:
"Joss Whedon... mentioned who we were meeting about, he said, 'There's this character Scarlet Witch that I'm interested in for you to play', and then he said, 'When you go home and Google her, just know you will never ever have to wear what she wears in the comics'," Olsen said.
"I did ballet growing up, but that's not a confident look. I feel like a lot of people would be stepping on your cape."
The first four episodes of WandaVision are available to watch now on Disney+. New episodes will air every Friday at midnight Pacific Time (3 AM EST) until after the first week of March.
