While Taylor Swift appeared countless times on The Ellen Degeneres Show, the talk show host went too far in 2013 and upset the pop singer by asking too many questions about her dating life. This episode was tough to watch, and Swift didn't look pleased about being put in that situation. It's no secret that Swift has some wealthy and famous ex-boyfriends, including Joe Alwyn with who she just broke up. But it's also a widely known fact that she doesn't like to talk about her love life in detail. She definitely saves that for her music.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 after accusations of the host's poor on-set behavior came out. But even before, viewers noticed that sometimes, DeGeneres would make her celebrity guests feel a little strange about the questions she would ask and the subjects she would focus on. What did Taylor Swift think of Ellen DeGeneres grilling her about her relationships?
How Did Taylor Swift React To Ellen DeGeneres Talking About Her Dating Life?
While Ellen DeGeneres is known for her pranks, she can also ask some prying questions. And while of course celebrities want to go on talk and late-night shows in order to promote a movie, TV show, or album, there is definitely a line that can be crossed. Fans would definitely agree that there needs to be some compassion and care in these TV interviews.
In 2013, Taylor Swift appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show after her album Red was released, and according to the Animated Times, DeGeneres continually talked about Swift's dating life.
She was very aggressive and kept asking questions and Swift became so upset that she actually called the talk show host out.
DeGeneres said, "You were here with your boyfriend Zac Efron last time. How's he doing?" Swift said "We actually never dated" and DeGeneres quickly replied, "Yes you did." She continued "Which song is about Zac on the new CD?" and kept saying that she didn't believe Swift.
DeGeneres then said that she would show pictures of Swift's rumored ex-boyfriends and Swift should ring a bell three times to confirm the relationships. Swift said that she didn't want to do that and looked incredibly unhappy about the direction that the conversation was going on. But DeGeneres continued on.
Swift said that people would "send angry e-mails." Finally, Swift said to the talk show host, “This makes me feel so bad about myself. Every time I come up here, you put a different dude up there on the screen, and it makes me really question what I stand for as a human being."
It appears that Taylor Swift commented on this interview several years later. According to Pop Crush, a TikTok user @thatnostaglicgirl shared Swift speaking in a radio interview, "I was like, 23 and people were just like, kind of reducing me to making slide shows of my dating life and putting people in there that I'd sat next to at a party once and deciding that my songwriting was, like, a trick rather than a skill and a craft."
Swift also said, "It's a way to take a woman who's doing her job and succeeding at doing her job and making things and in a way, it's figuring out how to completely minimize that skill."
While Swift didn't directly explain what interview she was referring to, the fact that she mentioned "slide shows" does suggest that she was referring to her 2013 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It's hard to know why DeGeneres continued with her plan of literally showing photos of Swift's rumored exes such as John Mayer when she knew that Swift wasn't okay with what was going on. It would have made sense to pivot and try to make her feel better.
The singer felt terrible and looked incredibly upset to be in this situation. And others didn't like watching this interview, either. According to Fox News, Emily Ratajkowski posted about it on TikTok and said, "This is so f---ed up. She is literally begging her to stop."
What Else Did Ellen DeGeneres Say About Taylor Swift's Dating Life?
Taylor Swift made many appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and DeGeneres never stopped trying to get some dirt on her personal life. Once, DeGeneres said, "You continue to write about ex-boyfriends. You would think that people would be scared to even be near you."
Another time, she wanted the singer to share who she was in a relationship with and said "I am dating blank." When Swift said "Nobody," DeGeneres didn't look pleased.
When Taylor Swift and Zac Efron were interviewed on the talk show because they starred in The Lorax together, DeGeneres also make the singer feel awkward. When she talked about appearing at The Grammy Awards and receiving a standing ovation, she said it was "top five best moments of my life." The host asked about the other four moments and added "one being with him, obviously," once again suggesting that Swift and Efron were a couple.
It was terrible of DeGeneres to continually ask Taylor Swift so many questions about her personal life. It's clear that, besides writing honest and raw songs about what she has gone through, she has never been someone who wants to spill too many details or secrets.
Why Did Taylor Swift And Joe Alwyn Break Up?
Even though Taylor Swift is secretive about her relationships, fans can pick out clues from her song lyrics. And while she hasn't said anything about her break-up with Joe Alwyn, fans wonder if she will share more information when she puts out her next album. Fans were surprised to find out in April 2023 that the couple broke up.
According to People, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn split up because they "weren't the right fit for one another," as a source told the publication. It was sad to hear that the relationship came to an end since the couple seemed to be happy together.
Us Weekly previously reported that both Alwyn and Swift wanted to keep things between them as secretive as possible. However, the singer talked a little bit about the relationship in Miss Americana, the documentary that was released on Netflix. This wasn't a huge surprise since it was a very honest movie where she also shared about the downsides of fame and feeling bad about her appearance.
Swift said of Alywn, “I was falling in love with someone who had a wonderfully normal, balanced life. We decided together we wanted our relationship to be private. I was happy. But I wasn’t happy in the way I was trained to be happy. It was happiness without anyone else’s input. We were just happy.”
