Elliot Page came out as trans in 2020 after presenting as Ellen Page for the majority of his career. Fans got to know Elliot in films like the X-Men franchise, Inception, and Juno when they were presenting as a woman and now follow Elliot as his true self.
Since transitioning, Elliot Page has endured bigotry and unapologetic transphobia with poise and dignity. He has also not slowed down his acting career in any way, shape, or form. This is the story of Elliot Page's life and career since his transition.
8 He Is Dating Again
When he was presenting as female, Elliot Page was married to Emma Portner, who remains supportive of Elliot and his transition despite their divorce. The couple was together for three years before Page filed for divorce, and Page remained single for over a year after that. But news broke in July 2022 that Page was getting back in the dating pool. His Umbrella Academy co-star Ritu Arya helped Page sign up for a dating app, which Page announced via Instagram.
7 He Stars In Umbrella Academy
When Page came out in 2020, the next season of his Netflix show The Umbrella Academy had already been written. The show's runner, Steve Blackman, got a call from Elliot just after the scripts were finished and told him they were starting to transition. Blackman wanted to be supportive of Elliot even though he did not request it. Blackman worked with trans rights advocates and re-wrote the season to allow Page to continue working on the show. Page said Blackman's incorporation of trans visibility into the show was, "beautiful," according to Entertainment Tonight.
6 Jordan Peterson Tried To Dead Name Elliot
Jordan Peterson is unapologetically transphobic. He became the famous conservative figure he is today after he lost his teaching job at the University of Toronto when he refused to respect his trans and non-binary students' pronouns. So deep is Peterson's transphobia that he routinely deadnamed Page on Twitter. The backlash against Peterson was swift and intense, and he ended up getting suspended from the platform. Peterson responded to his Twitter suspension with a long video where he rants against "woke moralism." In the same video he laments about LGBTQIA+ Pride: "Remember when pride was sin?" were his exact words. Peterson doubled down on his tweet saying he "would rather die" than delete it, opening himself up to even more mockery.
5 He Has Some Thoughts About One Of His Most Famous Roles
Although Juno remains one of Page's most popular roles, Page does not have fond memories of the production. The movie itself was not the problem, but Page describes that time of his life as a living hell because he was deeply closeted. Although Juno was a smashing success, Page was suffering on the inside and felt obliged to keep that suffering secret. Page opened up about his struggles during the Juno years in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Page is not shy to admit that although he is now vulnerable to bigotry and death threats from transphobes, he is much happier than when he was presenting as female.
4 He Is Voice Acting
Page slowed down his career while transitioning but did not quit acting. When going through such a massive change like this it is understandable one would need some time and space to breathe and get situated. But Page still managed to get work and continues to get work. Aside from The Umbrella Academy, he is the voice of Dusky in the film Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphin, which comes out in 2023. Page is also in the animated series ARK.
3 He Is Starring In A New Movie
In addition to voice acting, Page will be returning to film for the first time since transitioning in the movie Robodog. The film also stars Ron Perleman, Rainn Wilson, and Steve Zahn.
2 He Has Been Advocating For Trans Rights
Long before Page came out as trans, he was an advocate for a number of progressive causes like women's rights, but especially supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community. Page has always been an advocate and now, as a high-profile trans person, he uses his story and candid interviews about trans struggles to continue that advocacy. Prior to his transition, Page was a speaker at events for Time To Thrive, a pro-LGBTQIA+ conference in Las Vegas.
1 He Is Not Shy About His Transition
Although Page remains a very private person, even saying so in the Instagram post announcing his return to dating, Page is not silent about what it is like to be trans. He has been very vocal about the suffering one experiences when in the closet, the risk of coming out, the death threats and bigotry one must endure, and what needs to be done to make trans people feel included. Page has brought a huge degree of visibility to trans people and trans rights and, needless to say, his own life has changed for the better.
