When news of actors Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund expecting a child broke, fans were thrilled as they were hoping that both stars have found their perfect partner. Unfortunately, even though the two share a son, they didn't manage to work things out and in early 2022 they split.

How Long Have Emma Roberts And Garrett Hedlund Been Together?
In March 2019, soon after Emma Roberts split from actor Evan Peters she was spotted out and about holding hands with Garrett Hedlund. At the time, however, a source for E! News revealed that the two had "gone on a few casual dates and are exploring a relationship, but it is definitely not anything serious yet."
All throughout 2019, the couple kept their relationship private, and when asked about it, Emma Roberts would only comment about dating in Hollywood in general terms. "Relationships are hard enough between two people, let alone two people and the entire internet," Emma said in an interview with Los Angeles magazine."People say, 'Why's it so hard for celebrities to have relationships?' My answer? 'Do people photoshop their face over yours with your boyfriend?' It's just a weird thing. Hey, I get it: When I was growing up, I was obsessed with celebrity couples. It's just not as fun when it's you."
By 2020 it was clear that the two aren't casual anymore as they were frequently spotted hugging and kissing in public. In June 2020: it was reported that the two actors were expecting their first child together. Emma Roberts confirmed this in August 2020 with an Instagram photo that featured Garrett and her baby bump which she captioned with "Me…and my two favorite guys", revealing the gender of her child as well.
An insider for Us Weekly revealed that the couple was looking forward to their son.
"Emma and Garrett are getting more and more excited, which is so nice for them," the source said. "Garrett is really looking forward to becoming a dad and feels as though this is something he needed. He is ready to take on all the daddy duties, and Emma getting pregnant has forced him to become more responsible. He thinks that’s a blessing."
In 2021, both Emma and Garrett still seemed to be happy. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Garrett revealed just how happy he was. "I like to call this period the precious delirium," the actor said. "Everybody says, 'Appreciate it. Soak it up. It goes by so fast,' so I'm really taking that advice and really trying to wallow in it."
In January 2022, multiple outlets broke the news of the couple's split. People said that the two actors "broke things off a few weeks ago, following a rocky few months in their relationship" and a source for ET claimed that Emma and Garrett "grew apart when Garrett was away working."
Why Did Emma Roberts And Garrett Hedlund Really Break Up?
A little over a year after their son Rhodes Robert Hedlund was born, Emma and Garrett announced that they were splitting up. Because of the timing, it could easily be assumed that the two decided to break up because parenthood wasn't easy on them — but the truth seems to be different.
A source for Us Weekly claimed that the two broke up because of his addiction. "Garrett and Emma have a great co-parenting relationship. When he’s sober, he’s a great guy, and they’ve been handling co-parenting very well," the insider said, adding that Garrett "has been battling addiction [issues] for years."
According to Yahoo! Entertainment, because of a DUI arrest, the actor was required to do a 30-day rehabilitation program and attend addiction counseling programs regularly (as part of his plea deal). News of this broke while Emma was pregnant, and unfortunately, it seems as if Garrett's addiction was the cause of the couple's breakup.
The source for Us Weekly revealed that Emma gave Garrett "multiple ultimatums" before she called it quits.
However, the insider did add that the two are on speaking terms. "They have a very amicable relationship with each other and are being very adult about their breakup."
It certainly seems as if having a child put things into perspective for the actress who decided to end things after she saw no progress. According to Who's Dated Who, since their split, neither of the two has been linked to anyone else.
