“I don’t see myself as having stepped away from acting,” Emma, 33, recently shared with British Vogue. “I just see myself as wanting to expand what I do and being able to be in things that I have written or directed or produced.”

The last acting role Watson had was in 2019’s Little Women, which also starred Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, and Timothee Chalamet. Directed by Barbie’s Greta Gerwig, the film was an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel of the same name, following the lives of the March sisters—Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy—as they navigate the challenges of womanhood, love, and independence in 19th-century America.

When much of Hollywood went on pause the year after Little Women’s release during the COVID pandemic, Emma explained it made her realize her passions lay beyond acting now.

“I just realized how much I loved it and that I wanted to keep doing that,” she said, admitting the pandemic allow her to explore writing and directing. “And so I actually study now as well.”

Watson has since made her directorial debut in 2022 with a short film as part of the ad campaign for Prada Paradoxe fragrance. But the actress says she wants to star in something she’s written in the future. “To direct something that I’d written one day, that would make me pretty excited,” she explained.

However, the Beauty and the Beast star hinted that future acting roles could be years away for her. “To really be at the start of a project takes time,” Emma went on. “Films can be decades in the making, finding it and writing it and putting it together. I don’t see it as a closing down. I see it as an opening up.”

Watson rose to fame through her iconic portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, which spanned from 2001 to 2011. Her role as Hermione established her as one of the most recognizable young actresses globally. Following the conclusion of the Harry Potter series, Watson took on various roles, including notable performances in films such as 2012’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and 2013’s The Bling Ring.

Despite early successes, Watson's acting roles have slowed down in recent years, with fewer high-profile projects compared to her peak during the Harry Potter era. However, she has diversified her career by engaging in activism and humanitarian work. Notably, Watson served as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and launched the HeForShe campaign, advocating for gender equality. Additionally, she graduated from Brown University and continues to be involved in various social and environmental causes beyond her acting career. Needless to say, there’s no telling what this dynamic actress will tackle next.
