Spanish singer and songwriter, Enrique Iglesias, has been making music for almost three decades now. With a huge fan base all over the world, Iglesias' life is sort of an open book, except when it comes to his relationship. He's been dating Anna Kournikova since 2001 and all this time, their relationship has been shrouded in secrecy. There have been some rumors of an engagement, a marriage, and none of it were true. Before the couple had their first child, no one even knew that she was pregnant. Not to mention, suddenly, she added the name Iglesias on her Instagram profile, indicating a marriage. However, the world wants to know why the couple isn't married and why they won't.
Inside Anna Kournikova And Enrique Iglesias's Relationship
The 41-year-old Russian television personality is a former professional tennis player. Kournikova was an international tennis pro at the age of 14 and in 2000 she ranked number 8 in the world.
At the age of 21, she had an injury that affected her back and spine, which resulted in her retirement. In the same year, she started modeling, and that's exactly how she and Iglesias met.
The couple met on set while shooting a music video for Iglesias' song "Escape" in 2001. She played his love interest in the video, and they hit it off real quick. Iglesias talked about working with her in an MTV Making of the Video feature and said, "She's beautiful, talented, great tennis player. It doesn't take a good actor to kiss Anna and try to make it believable."
Iglesias and Kournikova have been together ever since, and they've kept their relationship pretty much under the covers. In 2002, they made their first red carpet appearance. Two years later, rumors that they were engaged started circulating when Kournikova was seen wearing a huge pink diamond ring.
However, they didn't get married, and in 2007 Iglesias said in an interview that they are divorced. He said, "We're divorced. I am single now, but that's okay. I don't mind being alone."
Five years later, Iglesias' representative said that they were still together. However, Iglesias started up a new conversation in 2014. According to HuffPost, Iglesias said, "Right now, I'm divorced. I got a divorce three days ago, and I wanted to give you guys the exclusive. I'm serious. No, seriously. Don't laugh."
While that confused the fans for a while, the couple stayed together, and in 2017 they welcomed their twin babies, a baby boy, and a baby girl. Three years later, in 2020, the couple had another girl.
To this day, the couple remains unmarried and together. On multiple occasions, they've opened up about why they never got married and probably never would.
Why Enrique Iglesias And Anna Kournikova Didn't Get Married
Together for more than 20 years, the couple is happily in a committed relationship and marriage doesn't seem to be on their to-do list. Both of them have commented separately on marriage, and they initially had different opinions. In 2008, Iglesias told PEOPLE that he has been trying to marry Kournikova. He said, “I always try, but she pays me no attention.”
On the other hand, in an interview with PEOPLE, Kournikova said, “I’m never getting married. Everything is good.”
Following this, Iglesias changed his statement in 2011 during an interview with CBS' Sunday Morning Show. He said, "When you have been with someone for such a long time, I don't think a wedding is going to make a difference. It won't make us happier."
He continued to say that he comes from divorced parents so that could be why he doesn't think people can love each other more because of a piece of paper.
Agreeing with Iglesias, Kournikova has said that marriage is not a priority to her. However, she admitted her huge desire to have kids. She said, "I absolutely want to have children, whether I have my own or adopt. I love taking care of people."
Twelve years and three children later in 2020, she answered a question about marriage with Women's Health Magazine. “It isn't important to me. I'm in a happy relationship – that's all that matters. I believe in commitment," she said. "I believe in being open and trusting each other and respecting each other completely."
This is why Iglesias and Kournikova are never getting married. For them, their little family and commitment to each other are more than an official marriage will ever be.
