Shaolin warrior monk, Shifu Shi Yan Ming has previously told TheThings about his childhood dream of using his martial arts skills to become a hero - and in many ways, he's done just that.

From becoming a pop culture phenomenon, to influencing countless people (celebrities included) to learn Shaolin Kung Fu, Shifu Shi Yan Ming has become an inspiration to many.

But, he's determined to help people in ways other than that, too.

In fact, when it comes to the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans, he's passionate about helping to make a difference.

We sat down with the monk once again, to hear his thoughts on how to combat Asian hate.

Start With The Self

Shifu Shi Yan Ming's first tip, in fighting against Asian hate?

Start with the self.

"Don't let anyone bring you down - make yourself strong and bright," he urges.

"Be confident in who you are, and stand up for yourself and others. Use your platform to speak out - and share that we are more alike than we are different. I'm a proud Asian American - that's why I decided to stay here, and make this country even richer."

The monk adds that if more people focused on the self, in general, the world would be a kinder place.

"When people express hatred against one another, it's a reflection of the hate they have for themselves," he points out.

"There are mirrors all around you. Understand yourself, and others will understand you. Respect yourself, and others will respect you. Help yourself, and you will have the ability to help the world."

Shifu Shi Yan Ming Shares His Advice For Aspiring Martial Artists

No conversation with the legendary Shaolin warrior monk would be complete without asking a few questions about some of his best-known feats to date.

More specifically, we couldn't wrap things up without asking if he had any advice for aspiring martial artists.

So, we did just that.

But, he laughs that there's no shortcut.

And - like his advice concerning the self when it comes to Asian hate - he reminds us that true power always comes from within.

Well, that, and hard work.

"Everyone always asks me this question, but I've already given all my secrets in my teaching, 'More chi, train harder.' You have to build more chi, and you do so by training harder. It's really that simple. It just takes dedication, discipline, and work. You must build a strong foundation in order to tap into your internal power and express your external power."

His parting words?

"Be a good person. Be an honorable person. Help others. Be kind. Be peaceful."

Ultimately, he beams, "Once you master yourself, then you can master others."

Who could say it better than the master, himself?
