Season 2 of Outer Banks is here, and fans continue to follow the Pogue's attempts to prove the innocence of John B. Routledge (Chase Stokes), searching for gold and making officers believe that the father and brother of Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline) committed murders. Fan-favorite character JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) was a big part of season 2, and was injured while protecting his friends.
Some fans are focusing on the similarities between Maybank and a certain character in an older show: Dawson's Creek.
Dawson's Creek focuses on wannabe filmmaker Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek) and his friends during their high school and college lives. Fans fell in love with Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), the comedic character who showed off his hilarious side in almost every season opener.
Maybank is a surfer who has a troubled relationship with his abusive father. Witter is a sailor who also has issues with his father. After Outer Banks season 2 included an episode featuring Maybank's father, one Twitter user couldn't help but compare both parents and their sons, and how they affected the character's personalities.
One user, @aslifeunfolds, said "JJ *IS* actually this generation's Pace Witter. Labeled the town screw-ups, 'bad' boys with deep issues formed from how their fathers treat them. Lovable, unquestionably loyal, and incredibly smart despite how they behave. I think that's why I love JJ so much."
And they weren't alone:
The first season of Outer Banks showed JJ Maybank being the member of the Pogues with an unforgettable personality, and the roughest homelife out of all members. His character only lives with his father, appearing as a drunk and violent man, in season 1.
Maybank moved out of his father's home near the end of season 1, but reencountered him after insisting his father remain safe. After making offensive comments to fellow Pogue Kiara "Kie" Carrera (Madison Bailey), he is led away by his son. He is never seen or spoken of for the remainder of the season.
Unlike Maybank, Witter was involved in lesser, yet still memorable obstacles, including the famous Dawson's Creek love triangle between himself, Leery, and Joey Potter (Katie Holmes). However, one of the character's most talked about subjects in the earlier seasons was the relationships with his family, especially his father.
Examples of the relationship between Witter and his father appeared in season 3, which showed his father belittling Witter's choices and actions. However, approaching the end of the episode, the two characters mend their relationship, making peace with one another. Although it's not mentioned whether their relationship improved, the discussion of their relationship declined as the series continued.
Pankow is still considered to be an unknown actor and has not starred in other major roles other than Outer Banks. Jackson had already received fame for his portrayal of Charlie Conway in The Mighty Ducks trilogy and portrayed Peter Bishop in Fringe from 2008-2013.
Outer Banks and Dawson's Creek are available to stream on Netflix. There is no word on whether Outer Banks will be renewed for season 3, but due to the show's popularity, its renewal is possible. Maybank is not involved in other projects, but Jackson is starring in Peacock's miniseries Dr. Death.
