A new documentary about Whitney Houston's life just debuted its trailer prior to its July 6th release date. Oscar-winning director (One Day in September) Kevin Macdonald was approached by The Houston estate to create an accurate portrayal of the famed singer, taking a new look at Houston's rise and struggle with fame. Macdonald was allowed unique access to make this documentary using never before seen footage of Houston singing at different ages showcasing her raw talent, and also exploring her struggles with stardom. The result seems to be an emotional, behind-the-scenes look at one of America's most beloved singers.

Macdonald approached Houston's life as a "mystery", partly because he really didn't know much about her, and because she was a person with so much talent, beauty, and success who spiraled out of control in the public eye. Bobby Brown, music producer Clive Davis, and Kevin Costner, are among those interviewed for the film. As her ex-husband, producer, and close friend these three men have differing insights into her life and eventual downfall. Costner and Houston memorably starred together in the hit 1992 film The Bodyguard which gave us the confusingly romantic song "I Will Always Love You." Members of the Houston family also appear in the film and share memories that have never been revealed to the public.

The trailer gives flashes of large performances and intimate moments over the course of her life. We're reminded of the perfection of her voice and her natural star power. It's definitely a must-see for any fan and even the most die-hard Houston fanatics will learn something new.

Houston died in February 2012 after being found in her bathtub in what was ruled an accidental drowning. She had chronically dealt with substance abuse issues and erratic behavior in her adult life. Her autopsy found that she had cocaine, Xanax, and marijuana in her system. Cocaine use was listed as a contributing factor to her death. If that wasn't tragic enough, her daughter Bobbi Kristina suffered a similar fate. Bobbi Kristina was found unconscious in a bathtub in January 2015. She remained in a coma until July 2015 when she was removed from life support and died. Both of their deaths were unexpected and heartbreaking.

Whitney will blissfully remind us of the Whitney who truly was an icon with an amazing voice. Her star quality and talent was undeniable. Her untimely passing left a hole in the music community.
