Back in the fall of 2007, The Big Bang Theory made its debut on CBS behind Two and a Half Men. It was another homerun for Chuck Lorre, as the show thrived for 12 seasons and 279 episodes. In truth, it could have lasted longer, had Jim Parsons agreed to continue on.
Shooting the series was quite the process, usually lasting three to five hours. We'll reveal some of the secrets that took place on-set, like what Penny was really drinking, and no, it wasn't really red wine.
We'll also take a look at the food the cast ate on the show, and if they were actually filling up on the food for real.
Finally, Kunal Nayyar revealed a cool detail of scenes that were shot at the staircase. As Raj stated, shooting the scene wasn't as straightforward as most fans thought.
The Big Bang Theory Had Several On-Set Secrets
Rarely did the cast of The Big Bang Theory go off the script, however, Kevin Sussman did this, whispering 'I love you' during a scene with Penny. The showrunners loved the moment so much, that Sussman was given extra work on the series.
The sitcom also had lots of neat little secrets, like for instance, when it came time to eat on the series, Kaley Cuoco would genuinely eat her food and saved room throughout the day.
She revealed in a now deleted Instagram post. "I always forgo lunch if I know we are shooting an eating scene like this one lol when you watch TONIGHT’s all new @bigbangtheory_cbs episode, you will know I was quite satisfied. Notice our crew cleaning up the props and throwing things away. The cast is moving on with their day. The scene is done. I’m wrapped. Time to go home."
As for the leftovers on the show, the food was donated to shelters.
A Big Bang Theory fan who took part in a live taping would also reveal that the red wine Penny would typically drink was in fact, grape juice setup by the stagehands prior to scenes.
Kunal Nayyar Revealed The Big Bang Theory Cast Kept Going Down The Same Flight Of Stairs
Who can forget the many scenes featuring the cast of Big Bang Theory walking up and down the stairs of Sheldon and Leonard's apartment, because of the broken elevator.
Well, credit goes to the cast, as according to Kunal Nayyar, they were constantly walking up and down the exact same flight of stairs.
"The way it works is, you go down the stairs, and then they yell, ‘Hold.’ They change the scenery from like if the apartment says 1a it suddenly says 2a or 3. They change the set, so it looks exactly like another floor."
As Nayyar revealed, what seemed like a simple scene actual took longer than expected, given that the cast would always have to reset when they'd go down the flight of stairs.
There was a lot of camera cutting and let's face it, at least the cast was able to get in some extra steps, going up and down the stairs. Also factor that each scene on the sitcom was shot twice. That's a lot of up and down!
Kunal Nayyar Ripped On Johnny Galecki's Chewing Gum Habit At The Bottom Of The Staircase
Along with revealing the staircase story, Nayyar had a bit of a disturbing detail to share regarding Johnny Galecki and his terrible tendency. Once Galecki would make it down the staircase, he would feel the need to constantly stick his gum against the wall. That didn't just happen once, it took place throughout the series!
Nayyar revealed, "Down there is nothing, there's a wall there where Johnny Galecki, for 12 years, would stick his chewing gum on. I'm not joking," promised his co-star. "There's a wall of 3,000 dried chewing gum from Johnny Galecki.
Kunal continued, "So if any of you are Johnny Galecki fans and you want his dried chewing gum, I am sure it's for sale somewhere on the internet. Welcome to Hollywood."
We truly feel sorry for whoever had to remove that, off the set...
