Fran Lebowitz's series stands out as she talks about how she feels about the city, and she definitely doesn't hold back.

Why does Fran Lebowitz's love life seem complicated?

A while ago, Fran Lebowitz shared "I just don't like domestic life," and she has said that she isn't interested in being in a long-term relationship.

According to Distractify.com, Fran once said, "I could not possibly be in a relationship for more than six days." She continued, "When I was younger. I might have said six months, although I think the longest relationship I was ever in was three years. But what I can't be is monogamous. That tends to upset people."

Fran has also said that she doesn't think that she's a good partner: according to Distractify, she was interviewed by Interview Magazine and explained, I'm the world's greatest daughter. I'm a great relative. I believe I'm a great friend. "I'm a horrible girlfriend. I always was."

Fran Lebowitz has definitely been open about not loving cooking in the past, so it makes sense that the talented, celebrated writer would say that she doesn't like being domestic. She told Interview Magazine that she once lived somewhere with no kitchen: "I don’t cook. But when I say no kitchen, I mean no sink. Okay? There was a sink in the bathroom."

Fran also said in the same interview that she thinks that "romance" and being domestic are different. It sounds like for her, spending time alone and living alone are important: "When I was young, I liked romance. But to me, romance is the opposite of domestic life. I just don’t want anyone in the apartment, not for longer than a few hours. Three or four hours, okay, fine. I just don’t want to hear someone else walking around. I am alternately very gregarious—very sociable—and then very solitary."

Fran Lebowitz is known as a funny and talented writer, having published two books: Metropolitan Life in 1978 and Social Studies in 1981. Fran has played herself in some documentaries, including Public Speaking, an HBO documentary that was released in 2010. In 1994, the Fran Lebowitz Reader was published, which features her essays.

While Fran talks a lot about NYC and the social and political issues that matter to her, she doesn't really talk about relationships or romance that much, so it makes sense that she would say she doesn't think that she can be in a long-term relationship.

The Pandemic And 'Pretend It's A City'

In an interview with The New Yorker that was published in the spring of 2020, the publication mentioned her "writer's blockade" that she had for a long time, and called her "famously averse to working."

The New Yorker says that Fran Lebowitz doesn't like technology and asked her about her time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fran said, "The only thing that makes this bearable for me, frankly, is at least I’m alone. A couple of people invited me to their houses in the country, houses much more lavish than mine. Some of them have the thing I would love to have, which is a cook, since I don’t know how to cook. And I thought, You know, Fran, you could go away and you could be in a very beautiful place with a cook, but then you’d have to be a good guest. I would much rather stay here and be a bad guest. And, believe me, I am being a bad guest."

Fran and Martin Scorsese worked on the show together, as he directed it, and in a fascinating interview with Deadline.com, Fran shared that she doesn't have Netflix. Fran said, "I still don’t have Netflix. In order to have Netflix, you need to have a WiFi connection in your apartment. I do not have that. So I still haven’t seen Netflix, but I’ve heard a lot about it."
