Full of humor, great writing, and scripts that would actually run way longer than normal one-hour TV shows (the average Gilmore Girls script was about 80 pages, versus 40-50 for other shows), Gilmore Girls is a show that has managed to retain public interest for years.
When it was revived in 2016 for a four-part mini-series, audiences got some answers to questions they’d been asking – whether they liked them or not. Many fans probably wondered how the relationships of Rory and Lorelai panned out, especially for Rory, whose fans are firmly planted in three camps. Now, four years after the revival, we’re still ranking the relationships of the WB show! When a show runs for seven seasons, there’s bound to be couples who were obviously meant to be, and ones that were oh-so wrong. We’re ranking 15 of them right here!
15 Dean & Lindsay Were Disastrous
Lindsay and Dean were a perfect example of why you don’t get married in high school (or right out of high school). Dean was never over Rory, as he expressed to Luke at his bachelor party, and Lindsay was trying desperately to hold onto a guy who didn’t love her. Add to that Dean’s cheating, and it’s clear why they’re in last place.
14 Lorelai & Christopher Were Toxic
Christopher never seemed to know if he wanted to be a husband and father or not. Promising the world to Lorelai only to leave her for pregnant Sherry was the last straw – but then he and Lorelai ran off and got married. This couple was just always in the way of Lorelai’s eventual happiness.
13 Luke & Rachel Were Destined For Heartbreak
Luke had a few failed relationships before he finally got to be with Lorelai (Nicole, anyone?), and Rachel was one of them. She was just the antithesis of Luke, but not in a way that kept him on his toes, but more like he was on the lookout at all times. Her leaving was a welcome respite from their relationship.
12 Rory & Logan Brought Out The Worst In Each Other
Sorry, Logan fans, but this relationship sucked. Logan was as spoiled as he was charming, and his behavior brought out the worst in Rory. From dropping out of Yale to stealing a boat, to cheating over a decade later, Rory changed when she met Logan, and became just as spoiled and narcissistic as him.
11 Rory & Dean Didn’t Age Well
Dean was a good first boyfriend to Rory, but their relationship went south as soon as she met Jess. It was clear from the beginning that she was into him, but she kept Dean on the hook just in case. In turn, Dean became controlling and needy. Then, years later, they actually get together, while he’s married! This relationship was just too immature to last.
10 Zach & Lane Were Never Meant To Be
Lane and Zach were never supposed to be together, because, had Adam Brody not left for The O.C., it would have been Lane and Dave Rygalski. Instead, we got this lukewarm pairing of Lane and Zach, who waited until after marriage to get it on, then Lane got knocked up right away. This relationship stole her fire, and that’s a great injustice.
9 Lorelai & Max Just Fell Short
Max was a sweet guy who undoubtedly would have been an excellent stepfather to Rory. He was romantic, with his 1000-yellow-daisies proposal, and thoughtful (an engagement ring to her exact taste), but ultimately, it wasn’t enough. Lorelai knew in her heart he wasn’t the one, and so did the audience, which is why they could never be soulmates.
8 Liz & T.J. Managed To Make It Work
Flighty Liz who didn’t have a great track record when it came to romance finally managed to find a good guy in T.J. – a guy so decent even Luke had to begrudgingly admit it! Their Renaissance Fair-themed nuptials were weird and wonderful, just like the two of them. We can see them making it.
7 Paris & Doyle Could’ve Conquered The World
One of the greatest mistakes made in the revival (and there were many) was breaking up Paris and Doyle. These two could have conquered the world together! With matching quick wits and speed-of-light rates of speech, they would suck to be sat next to at a party, but were well-matched and each others’ equals.
6 Kirk & Lulu Were Matching Weirdoes
Kirk was just so thrilled to have a girlfriend that he couldn’t help himself from introducing her to everyone! These two were quirky and cute, and were even still together for A Year In the Life! Lulu loved Kirk for who he was, and she was pretty normal (compared to Kirk) which made Kirk mellow out a bit.
