Over the last couple of decades, movie studios have been making a fortune from the release of comic book movies. In fact, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become such a massive force that it is now the highest-grossing film franchise of all time. Amazingly enough, the MCU has also become a powerhouse in the television world due to series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and all of the Disney + shows.

Based on all of the success that the MCU and several similar franchises have enjoyed, it is clear that a lot of people can’t get enough of comic book movies. Of course, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some people in the movie business don’t feel that way. On the other hand, several Hollywood superstars have come out in defense of comic book movies. For example, after he dismissed comic book movies as “not cinema”, several MCU stars responded to Martin Scorsese’s comments.

Of course, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is far from the only successful comic book movie franchise. With that in mind, it is interesting to learn how some actors who starred in non-MCU comic book movies feel about the genre dominating the box office. Fortunately, there is no need to wonder how Deadpool star Gina Carano feels about comic books movies since she made her opinion pretty clear.

A Controversial Figure

At this point, it is nearly impossible to look at anything to do with Gina Carano without bringing up the controversy that engulfed her career in 2021. After all, there is a very good chance that she won’t be a notable part of any mainstream movies in the future due to everything that took place after some fans turned on Carano.

In the months that led up to Gina Carano’s career taking a massive hit, she had begun to become a controversial figure due to her social media postings. For example, when a lot of social media users began to put their preferred pronouns in the bios, Carano posted “boop/bob/beep” instead. For obvious reasons, most assumed that Carano was trying to mock people’s preferred pronouns and were very upset. Shortly after, Carano deleted those words and explained that her Mandalorian co-star Pedro Pascal helped her understand why people were posting their pronouns in their bios. Furthermore, Carano wrote that she “stand(s) against bullying”.

After the preferred pronouns controversy, Gina Carano again stepped in hot water in early-2021. After Carano mocked masks, took a position against the Black Lives Matter movement, and questioned the 2020 Presidential election, several observers were up in arms about her social media postings. Then she posted an image on Instagram that took the outrage against her to another level.

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors... even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don´t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

Immediately after Gina Carano posted an image with those words, the backlash was swift and severe. With her representatives and Disney announcing that they were cutting all ties with Carano, her career took a hit that it likely will never recover from. Furthermore, it now seems like she will always be a controversial figure who is associated with Cancel Culture.

Carano’s Take On Comic Book Movies

Years before Gina Carano found herself at the center of controversy, she was just an actor on the rise. During that stage in her career, she landed a role in the hit 2016 comic book movie Deadpool. While promoting Deadpool, Carano spoke to a writer for the website Little White Lies. During their conversation, Carano said, “that the people involved in making Deadpool were also awesome”.

Aside from talking about her specific experience working on Deadpool, Gina Carano gave her take on comic movies in general during the aforementioned interview. “I must say, I wasn’t much of a Marvel or DC movie watcher. I dunno… I saw Iron Man and I saw The Avengers. But I never watched them thinking I’d eventually be in one. I’ve since watched them all and have developed a newfound appreciation of the whole Marvel universe. I just love that there are these fictional characters that people are so passionate about.” From there, Carano went on to discuss the passion that comic book movie fans display at places like Comic-Con and how much she appreciates that level of emotion.
