After all, the Fantastic Beasts films aren’t as popular, Johnny Depp and Ezra Miller have become big issues, and J.K. Rowling has even upset people who starred in her movies. As a result of all the negative attention that has been paid to the Potter franchise, some people may have forgotten how successful and popular the series has been over the years.
At the height of the Harry Potter series’ popularity, there were people all over the world who were willing to line up for hours to buy the latest book the night it was released. Considering how much people have cared about the Potter series over the years, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that people are very passionate about all aspects of the franchise. For example, there are a lot of fans who debate every aspect of the Potter franchise including the people who have voiced their opinion about why Bonnie Wright’s portrayal of Ginny Weasley was bad.
Why Some Fans Hate The Harry Potter Movies’ Ginny Weasley
In this day and age, there are a lot of places online where people can go to communicate with people who have the same passions as they do, including all of the social media platforms. However, a lot of people turn to one platform above all others to communicate about the subjects they care about the most, Reddit. For example, anyone who loves the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies can go on the r/harrypotter subreddit to communicate with other fans about them.
During the early-2010s, a Reddit user that goes by u/erikathegreat went on the r/harrypotter subreddit to ask a simple question, “Why all the hate on Bonnie Wright?” In the comment section of that person’s post, one thing quickly becomes clear, nobody seems to be blaming Bonnie Wright specifically for the problems they have with their character.
According to the top response in the aforementioned Reddit thread that was wriiten by u/zntaylor, the issue with Ginny Weasley in the movies is the lack of chemistry she shares with Harry Potter. “I like her, and I think she did a good job portraying Ginny, however, I didn't like that she and Daniel Radcliffe had 0 chemistry. I know there was no way around that seeing that they were chosen as kids, I just wished that there was SOMETHING between them.”
Just like the previous user, u/sonicfacial wrote on Reddit about having a problem with Ginny Weasley’s perceived lack of chemistry with Harry Potter. According to them, it seemed like Ginny was “taught to kiss by her little sister” since her embrace with Harry was so awkward. On top of that, u/sonicfacial complained about how Ginny comes across in the films as an individual character.
“Bonnie did do a good job of acting and playing what the Director wanted, but I just had such a different idea of Ginny in the books than what was portrayed in the films. Book Ginny was much more complex than the movies made her to be. I saw a very dynamic progression in the books from very shy and outclassed witch to independence and even some scars there. I felt Ginny went through a lot of the hardships Harry and Ron and Hermione went through, but got NO recognition for it. Movie Ginny was so simple and plain.”
Bonnie Wright Also Gets A Lot Of Love From Fans
On the bright side, the internet is a wonderful tool that people can use to learn and communicate with people all over the world. On the other hand, there is no doubt that the internet can be a cesspool depending on how you use it. With that in mind, it is worth putting the complaints that people have about the version of Ginny Weasley that is featured in the Harry Potter movies in the proper context.
First off, it is important to note that a lot of the people who complain about the version of Ginny Weasley seen in the Harry Potter movies do so in a completely respectful way. As a result, there is no reason to be mad at the people like that who dislike the character in the films. That said, anyone who thinks that everyone feels the same way about the way Ginny was handled in the films is completely wrong. For proof of that, all you have to do is look at what Bonnie Wright told E! News about her fans in 2021.
"I've learned so much and met so many incredible people. I especially love meeting young fans who weren't even alive when the movies were out. I just think, 'Wow! This is going to keep going in that generational kind of way.'" When you imagine Bonnie Wright greeting innocent young Harry Potter fans who adore her character, that puts the whole thing in a new light.
