Hailey Bieber and Taylor Swift's 2023 scandal on TikTok started with the repairing of a video clip of the show Drop The Mic that aired back in 2017. The show was hosted by Method Man and Hailey Baldwin, now known as Hailey Bieber. In the clip, Hailey was seen rolling her eyes and sticking her tongue out as Method Man said, “Hollywood’s top stars face off on a one-on-one battle full of the meanest lyrics about a celebrity since Taylor Swift’s last album.”
This clip seems to have found its way to Selena Gomez’s FYP that’s because she left a comment underneath the clip defending Taylor Swift by writing, “So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.”
It’s a known fact that Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are besties. One time, Selena referred to Taylor as her only best friend in Hollywood, saying “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor, so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong.”
The question now lingering on most people’s minds is, before the TikTok feud between Hailey Bieber and Taylor Swift, did the two beauties ever get along? Here's what little we know about the true nature of their relationship...
Has There Been Bad Blood Between Hailey Bieber And Taylor Swift In The Past?
Taylor and Hailey were never close friends per se, but there was no bad blood between them. As a matter of fact, during the time Taylor Swift and Hailey’s husband Justin Bieber weren’t seeing eye to eye, Hailey's favorite movie at that time was Cats. Cats is a musical comedy film featuring Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, and Idris Elba, among others.
Hailey left a string of positive feedback on her Instagram stories in praise of the film. She also shared some of the movie’s soundtracks and wrote, “My Christmas gift from the universe is the release of @catsmovie,”
This clearly shows Hailey wasn't on bad terms with Taylor Swift that's because Taylor was one of the main characters in the film. With that, fans were left wondering what could be going on in Hailey's husband’s mind. We all know that Taylor Swift just couldn’t stand Justin Bieber that's because he always tended to side with people who feuded with her.
When Taylor had a dispute with her former record label, Big Machine owner, Scooter Brawn, in 2016, Justin took sides with Scooter on an Instagram post saying, “Scooter has had your back since the days you graciously let me open up for you! As the years have passed we haven’t crossed paths and gotten to communicate our differences, hurts, or frustrations. So for you to take it to social media and get people to hate on Scooter isn't fair. What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog? Seems to me like it was to get sympathy. You also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully Scooter."
After a while though, Justin ended up apologizing to Taylor Swift regarding the same matter. On July 1st, 2019, he posted a long apology statement to Taylor Swift on Instagram.
This Is Why Taylor Swift Thinks Hailey Bieber Is Copying Selena Gomez
According to PopJuice, from the very beginning of Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s relationship, Hailey had always been a fan. In fact, most people believe Hailey was somehow obsessed with Selena and Justin’s relationship from the start, not unlike many of their fanbases. Hailey even used to post back-to-back Tweets about how she was ‘100% team Jelena.’
Eventually, when Justin and Selena’s relationship came to an end in 2018, Justin went ahead to marry Hailey. This caused so much confusion among the fans.
To add to that, on different occasions, Hailey was spotted rocking the same outfits Selena wore before her and also ate out at the same restaurants Selena has been at.
This type of messy obsession got people to believe that Taylor Swift wasn’t happy to see her friend Selena go through certain humiliations Hailey was trying to provoke. Fans have always speculated that Taylor never really liked the fact that Hailey was copying Selena. Even though Taylor hasn’t said it publicly, fans believe that her private conversation with Selena has this kind of talk included.
Was Hailey Bieber Once In The ‘Tailor Squad’?
In the mid-2010s, Taylor Swift had a group of close famous friends who were referred to as Taylor Squad. According to Taylor Swift Wiki, these friends included Sarah Hyland, Emma Stone, Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, Kendall Jenner, and many others.
Of course, Taylor is friends with some of her squad until now, but she seems to have parted ways with others.
During an interview with Elle in 2019, Taylor updated her fans on where her relationship stands with her group of friends by saying, “In my twenties I found myself surrounded by girls who wanted to be my friend. So I shouted it from the rooftops, posted pictures, and celebrated my newfound acceptance into a sisterhood, without realizing that other people might still feel the way I did when I felt so alone. It’s important to address our long-standing issues before we turn into the living embodiment of them.”
It’s important to note that in 2016, while the Taylor Squad was still strong and active, Hailey Bieber threw shade at the group during an interview with Yahoo 7 by saying, “I don’t understand the Taylor Swift squad at all. I don’t know what having a squad means. I just have my friends and that’s it. I don’t think that you need to create a public squad. I don’t know what that proves.”
