Harry Potter star Rupert Grint has opened up about the possibility of reprising his role as Ron Weasley in a potential reboot of the franchise. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor shared more about what fans could expect from the Return To Hogwarts HBO Max special.
The event celebrates 20 years since the release of the franchise's first film — Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone — and features special appearances from over 30 cast members. Grint appears alongside his co-stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) on-screen for the first time in over a decade. It's an emotional time for Harry Potter fans, but more so, because Rupert Grint just announced he's open to playing Ron Weasley in a possible reboot again.
Rupert Grint Doesn't Have A Reason To Say No
There has been conversation about a Harry Potter reboot for years now — both in the form of movies and a television series.
Though the actors haven't acknowledged the possibility of a reboot before, Grint recognized that there had been "talk" about expanding the film's universe. He also shared that he wouldn't say no if he was asked to reprise his role as the wizard and Harry Potter's best friend Ron Weasley.
Grint believes that he initially had a "strange" relationship with his character, but feels more like him not that he has experienced fatherhood, much like Ron. The actor and his longtime partner Georgia Groome welcomed their daughter Wednesday last year.
He shared with the publication: "There's been a lot talk of [playing Ron again] with everything going on and I feel like I am that character," said Grint.
The actor further expressed he was very proud to be a part of the franchise, and wouldn't mind going back someday. "I think I had a very strange relationship with him at first but I feel like there's a lot of me in there so I'm quite protective of him. I don't really have a good reason to say no, I'm very proud to be a part of it."
In the interview, Rupert Grint also shared that the Harry Potter movies were their "childhood," referring to the golden trio collectively. He doesn't think much about the wizarding world since leaving and communicated that it was "fun" to go back and reminisce over incredible memories.
