In recent years, Ewan McGregor has had a complicated personal life. On-screen, the Scottish actor has given us many memorable roles in some of the best films, including the Star Wars franchise. Off-screen, McGregor divorced his first wife, Eve Mavrakis, and started a relationship with his Fargo and Birds of Prey co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead co-star, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Unsurprisingly, McGregor's daughters weren't pleased with their father's decision to leave their mother for a younger woman. The new arrangement made things awkward for the entire McGregor family. Years later, have things settled down? Has McGregor repaired things with his daughters now that he and Winstead are married and have welcomed a son?
Ewan McGregor And Mary Elizabeth Winstead Began Dating In 2017
Ewan McGregor, who reprised his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022, married Eve Mavrakis in 1995 after dating for only six months. In 2009, the actor spoke about his marriage to Men's Health. He said that if you have to work in a relationship, it's not worth it. With Mavrakis, he never had to work. "We just have it," he said.
The couple has two biological children, Clara, born in 1996, and Esther, born in 2001. In 2006, they adopted Jamyan, born in 2001, from Mongolia, and Anouk, in 2011. Despite portraying himself as a family man, McGregor allegedly had a couple of off-screen affairs over the years.
In October 2017, things got rocky between the pair when McGregor was seen kissing his Fargo co-star, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who split from her husband in May, the same month People confirmed that McGregor and Mavrakis also split. The actor and Mavrakis filed for divorce in 2019, citing irreconcilable differences. By then, McGregor and Winstead had been seen multiple times and attended public events together.
McGregor made things more awkward by thanking both Mavrakis and Winstead in his 2018 Golden Globe Awards acceptance speech. Amidst all the drama, McGregor's daughters started to throw him shade.
Ewan McGregor Dating Mary Elizabeth Winstead Allegedly Hurt His Relationship With His Daughters
In 2019, fans accused Ewan McGregor's eldest daughter, Clara, of throwing him shade indirectly in a post about her mother. Clara captioned the photo of Mavrakis with "my mother, ladies & gentlemen • 50 is the new 30 apparently."
After a fan jokingly warned Clara to keep Mavrakis away from her boyfriend, Clara seemingly called her father out. "Nah I keep her away from a–hole men who leave my goddess of a mother. :)," Clara wrote, according to People.
Clara set the record straight after hearing the theories about her comment. "Let's make one thing clear," she wrote on her Instagram story. "I was not attacking my dad or calling him [an] a–hole. I was simple saying she deserves someone who isn't one. F— tabloids. Don't believe everything you read."
There's a reason why fans were quick to assume Clara's comments were aimed at McGregor. She commented on a photo of Mary Elizabeth Winstead shared on a fan account back in July 2018. She didn't hold back on her feelings.
"Most beautiful and talented woman on earth? Oh man y'all are delusional. The girl is a piece of trash x," she wrote.
However, she later apologized, saying, "It wasn't the most mature way to go about things, but I was angry and upset."
According to the Mirror, Clara admitted she wasn't in a hurry to meet McGregor's new partner. She said, "I'm good. I wish them all the best, but I'm staying out of that, for sure."
So, it's safe to say that McGregor's daughters were not pleased with him leaving their mother for the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World actress.
Ewan McGregor Reconciled With His Daughters Following His Marriage To Mary Elizabeth Winstead
In 2021, Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead welcomed their first child and the actor's first son, Laurie. The baby's birth seemed to have helped the family come together again after some tense years apart. Both Clara and Esther posted heartwarming photos of themselves holding the newborn.
"Welcome to the world little brother congratulations to my Dad & Mary - this is the greatest gift," Clara wrote on Instagram. In Esther's post, she wrote "Welcome to the family little Laurie."
In 2022, McGregor spoke about his estrangement with Clara during an interview with GQ. He talked about his and his daughter's film, You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder. Clara wrote the movie about their relationship.
"She tells me that she’d come up with an idea about writing about us. At first, I was a bit nervous. I didn't know what that meant," McGregor said. "I got the script while I was making Halston. I sat down to read it and I was blown away. It was a beautiful story about us. There's things that aren't accurate, or are bent, but they still reflect our estrangement for a while."
The movie follows the father and daughter as he drives her to rehab, which is the most fictional aspect. "The drive is fictional," McGregor said. "But for a couple of years, we sort of lost her. So the storyline is about her realizing that she needs the help her father's trying to give.
"Along the way, their relationship is healed somewhat. I was so impressed by the story, by the humor. There's a sort of recognition in it that made me very proud and at the same time very close to her. I felt like she understood more than I'd thought.
"My position, but also stuff about parenting somebody who's in trouble. It's a f--king horribly difficult situation to be in. You're so scared of what can happen. You will do anything in the world to stop losing them. It's a reflection of us and our story. I was really impressed with her as an actor. It was just the most remarkable experience to be acting with her."
McGregor was obviously very thankful that his estrangement from his children had come to an end, but he didn't expect everything to have healed yet. "A divorce in a family is a bomb going off in everyone's life – my children's lives," he said. "The sort of healing of that is ongoing."
McGregor and his daughters have definitely learned a lot about themselves and their relationship together over the years. They emerged from their estrangement stronger than ever.
